If you have the myth of Spanish movida, Valencia will not disappoint, and not only because it is a large city with a lot of clubs. Nightlife in Valencia is typically Spanish: it is lively and lasts a long time, in the clubs, streets and squares of the city.
A typical Valencian night starts with an aperitif, perhaps with Agua de Valencia, the city’s typical cocktail made with Cava or champagne, orange juice, vodka and gin. It then continues in clubs with live music and then off to dance until late in the morning in a neighbourhood disco-club or mega-disco outside the centre. If you are not used to being late, an aperitif might be enough… a typical Spanish pre-evening usually ends around two o’clock in the morning!
In the different districts you can find very different venues, for example the university areas are more suited to the young and young-at-heart, while more chic areas such as Canovas or the terrace of the City of Arts and Sciences will appeal to a more adult clientele. How to choose where to go to have fun? Our guide to Valencia’s nightlife will help you!
It really isn’t difficult to find bars, pubs and discos in Valencia, but there are areas that are more suited to a certain type of entertainment than others. These are the best areas to have fun in Valencia.
The very central Barrio del Carmen lives as intensely at night as it does during the day (and maybe more) and is an essential destination for those who want to experience the Valencian movida. Its characteristic narrow streets, packed with bars, restaurants and nightclubs, are a popular meeting place for groups of friends. The focal points of the nightlife in Barrio del Carmen are Plaza del Tosal, Calle Caballeros and Plaza de la Virgen.
This is the ideal area for aperitif time: the charm of this historic area is a wonderful setting for a drink at sunset, plus the sheer number of bars means you’re sure to find one to your liking.
The downside of El Carmen? Some Valencians complain that it is a bit too touristy. But it is also one of its advantages, as many tourists stay here: if you choose to stay in this area too, you won’t need to move around to have fun in the evenings!
Ruzafa is Valencia’s alternative neighbourhood, young and eclectic, with an underground atmosphere somewhat reminiscent of London. Within ten years, excellent restaurants and trendy cafés have sprung up in this neighbourhood south of the centre, but Ruzafa is not only one of the best areas to eat in Valencia, it is also one of the most culturally vibrant, with an abundance of bookshops and art galleries.
It has a varied nightlife, but is particularly recommended for those who love independent music, which can be heard live in small clubs or mixed in the neighbourhood’s legendary disco-pubs.
Bordering Ruzafa is the neighbourhood of Canovas, an area with many green areas. Here, too, you can find many bars and clubs, suitable for an adult clientele.
If you come to Valencia in the summertime, you must spend an evening at the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences, which in the warmer months turns into a fantastic location for outdoor entertainment. You can start the evening in the spectacularly lit Umbracle bar and end it in the Mya disco housed in the basement.
Benimaclet is a student area where you can find many small bars where you can have a cheap drink and maybe catch an acoustic concert, a literary reading or a play. The streets around the main square, Benimaclet Square, are the busiest at night.
It is also worth making a foray to Benimaclet to see a particular area of Valencia, characterised by low houses that make it look more like a village than a city.
Other lively student areas at night are Aragon, Amistat, Plaza Xúnquer, Honduras and the Cedar.
If for you nightlife is synonymous with discos, and better still megadiscos with thousands of people, then the best area in Valencia to have fun is the port area. Here you will find the trendiest discos in Valencia, offering a variety of music genres including electronic, house and alternative.
It is useless to enter a disco before two o’clock because you will find the clubs still empty. In Valencia, dancing starts late and finishes late.
Palosanto Tablao6 is a club renowned for its authentic and engaging flamenco shows. Located in the city centre, it offers an intimate experience where music, song and dance come together in an intense and passionate performance: the audience can enjoy the talent of experienced performers up close, accompanied by tapas and typical drinks.
Booking in advance is recommended, given the popularity of the venue, which also organises special events and workshops related to flamenco culture.
