Think going to Africa is too long a journey? Go to Valencia! The exciting Spanish city counts among its many attractions the Bioparc, a zoological park entirely dedicated to the ecosystems of the African continent.
Of very modern conception, this park is inspired by the zoo-immersion principle, with almost invisible barriers to give visitors the feeling of being inside the environment in which the animals live.
Great importance is also attached to respect for the animals and their behaviour in nature, which we try to reproduce as faithfully as possible. For this reason, only multi-species enclosures are used, where several animals live together, thus recreating an environment as close as possible to their natural surroundings.
Unique experiences await you in the park. You can walk through four different ecosystems, be in close (but risk-free!) contact with wild animals, explore the fascinating island of Madagascar, admire Africa’s iconic animals such as giraffes, lions and elephants but also other more curious and lesser-known ones, discover the underworld inhabited by aardvarks and hyenas, and visit an African cave.
A visit to Bioparc Valencia is a fascinating walk through the four main African ecosystems, faithfully reproduced with their flora and fauna, namely:
Attractions not to be missed are the reproduction of the Kitum Cave, one of the caves of Mount Elgon in Kenya, the reproduction of the Ankarana Reserve in Madagascar with its cute animals made famous by a famous cartoon, and the underground savannah area, an often unknown but decidedly fascinating world.
To learn more about the animals you can admire in the park and the way it is managed, you can participate in one of the many free entertainment and education activities that are organised daily.
Every day you can watch chimpanzees, gorillas and elephants being fed, guided tours of the island of Madagascar and meetings with park staff who will talk to you about how the animals are cared for and what their specific needs are.
If you arrive early, you will be able to say good morning to the animals as they are brought out from the recent indoor to the outdoor enclosures, or when the park closes, you will be able to see them return to their den at night. Numerous specific activities are also organised for children, some free and some for a fee.
There is also a state-of-the-art cinema in which documentaries about the park’s animals are shown in rotation. For lunch or a snack, there are plenty of options to choose from: set menu restaurants, cafeterias and kiosks.
Entrance tickets to Valencia Bioparc can be purchased at the park’s ticket offices until one hour before closing time or online. Buying them online before departure will save you queuing at the entrance once you arrive.
Single tickets have different prices for adults (13-64 years old), students (up to 25 years old, presenting a student card), children (4-12) and seniors (+65). Children under 4 years of age get in for free.
There are also annual passes, convenient for those who stay in Valencia for longer periods and want to return to the park on several occasions.
Bioparc is open all year round. Opening time is 10:00 a.m., while closing time varies according to season from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Bioparc is an attraction that is easily accessible from the centre of Valencia. You can even get there on foot by following a pleasant footpath along the Turia river or by bicycle.
To get to Bioparc by public transport, you can take buses 98 and 99, which stop right in front of the entrance gate; if you prefer to travel by metro, you can take lines 3, 5 or 9 and get off at the Nou d’Octubre stop, about a 5-minute walk from the park.
If arriving by train from other cities, the recommended station is Estación del Norte: from here take bus 67 and get off at the Hernández Lázaro – Vall de la Ballestera stop, also about a 5-minute walk from the park.
Arriving by car is also very convenient, as the park has a large, reasonably priced private car park.
Valencia Bioparc is located slightly away from the centre, on the edge of a quiet though popular neighbourhood. However, there are very few places to sleep in the area, and not even close to the park’s entrance. It is perhaps better to move a little closer to the centre – or at the very least near the 98 and 99 bus stop or the metro – and enjoy the tourist Valencia a little more.
Bioparc Valencia is located to the west of the city centre, at the end of the Turia Gardens nestled between the Parc de Capcalera and the Parc de la Canaleta.
City Card allow you to save on public transport and / or on the entrances to the main tourist attractions.
