Torrevieja Salt Lagoons

The salt lagoons of Torrevieja are an extraordinary natural spectacle and contribute to creating a special microclimate with proven health benefits that attract an international audience of tourists interested in wellness.

There are two huge salt flats in Torrevieja, interconnected and declared a nature reserve: one is named after the town, the other is known as La Mata.

The Torrevieja lagoon is also called the pink lagoon because of the incredible colour of its waters, probably caused by the presence of pigments from the Halobacterium bacteria that live in extreme saline environments and an algae called Dunaliella Salina. But in summer, the lagoon gets even pinker thanks to the thousands of flamingos that spend their breeding season here, making this unique place even more enchanting.

Bathing and mud bathing in the salt lagoon

Bathing in the pink lagoon has extraordinary health benefits and is both a pleasant and enjoyable experience.

Don’t miss the opportunity to try this natural spa. Dive fearlessly into the lagoon waters, which never exceed a depth of one and a half metres, and let yourself go completely: thanks to the high concentration of salt, you will float effortlessly!

A bath in the salty waters of the pink lagoon is a real treat for the skin: the beneficial properties of salt have long been known and it is used for the prevention and treatment of skin diseases.

As it evaporates, the salt water releases a high concentration of iodine and mineral salts into the air, which improve respiratory system functions (when you say good air, eh!).

If you want to increase the benefits for your skin, but also for your muscles, joints and tendons, do as the locals do: sprinkle your body with the black lagoon mud, walk for a while along the salt banks until the mud has dried, then dive into the water. For more relaxation, repeat several times!

Beaches of Torrevieja

The coast of Torrevieja

Torrevieja boasts over 20 kilometres of coastline, where wide sandy beaches alternate with small rocky coves. The Playa de Los Locos, in the heart of the city, is one of the most popular for its golden sand and crystal-clear waters. Over 700 metres long and awarded the Blue Flag, it offers all essential services: from sunbed and umbrella rental to chiringuitos where you can enjoy paella and fresh fish. Its name (‘crazy beach’) derives from the lively waves that characterise it, particularly appreciated by surfers.

Continuing southwards you come to Playa del Cura, the urban beach par excellence. At 500 metres long and with a wide promenade full of bars and restaurants, it is perfect for families. Its calm waters and gently sloping seabed make it ideal for children, while the numerous sports activities and children’s games guarantee fun for all ages.

Playa de La Mata, which stretches for almost 2.5 kilometres in the northern area, is an oasis of tranquillity compared to the more central beaches. Surrounded by natural dunes and pine forests, it offers a wilder and more unspoilt environment. Quiet areas can still be found here even in high season, and its promenade is perfect for romantic sunset strolls.

For those seeking more intimate coves, the Calas de las Piteras and Cala Ferris offer a charming alternative to the large beaches. These small rocky coves are perfect for snorkelling, with crystal-clear waters revealing a wealth of underwater life. Their natural beauty and more reserved atmosphere make them particularly popular with those seeking tranquillity.

What to do in Torrevieja

In addition to its natural spa and beaches, Torrevieja offers many other possibilities for recreation and relaxation. Along its 14 km of coastline are several waterfront pedestrian boulevards, all designed for the comfort and well-being of citizens and visitors alike; come for a stroll, eat an ice cream, have a drink or simply laze around the city’s promenades.

If an urban walk isn’t enough for you and you want to do some trekking, choose one of the many hiking trails in the area, which can also be enjoyed on a mountain bike.

Check out the fishing and commercial port area that keeps the centuries-old seafaring tradition of Torreviejas alive.

Museums

The city of Torrevieja boasts some of the most original museums on the Costa Blanca. These are thematic museums that testify to the city’s strong ties with the sea and its traditions.

If you want to visit just one, the Museo del Mar y la Sal, an ethnological museum that investigates the inseparable relationship between Torrevieja, the sea and salt, with an interesting section dedicated to ‘salinero’ handicrafts, is a must.

Important testimonies to the city’s maritime tradition are its three floating museums: the submarine S-61 Delfin, the patrol boat Aduanera Albatros III and the schooner Pascual Flores. The latter is a reconstruction of the boats used by Torrevieja’s sailors for the salt trade.

Events in Torrevieja

Torrevieja boasts interesting cultural centres and auditoriums where music, theatre, dance and art and photography exhibitions are organised.

These include the Municipal Theatre, the International Auditorium, the Centro Cultural Virgen del Carmen, the Palacio de la Música, the Alijibes and Vista Alegre exhibition halls.

Habaneras

One of the typical traditions of Torreviejas are the habaneras, popular songs of Caribbean origin that originated during the round trips of local sailors carrying salt to Cuba.

Every year, this tradition is revived during the Certamen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonía, a festival held at the end of July in the old enclosure from which the ‘salineros’ of Torreviejas used to leave for the Caribbean. It is certainly the city’s most important cultural event.

Less formal is the Noche de Habaneras en la Playa, a night when you can listen to the most popular habaneras in the enchanting natural setting of Playa del Cura.

If you want to learn more about habaneras, visit the Museo de la Habanera Ricardo La Fuente, a loving tribute from the people of Torrevieja to this fascinating musical tradition and one of its undisputed masters.
