Benidorm‘s Playa de Poniente, a very long beach of fine sand and transparent waters, is one of the most beautiful urban beaches in Spain.
Larger and less worldly than the adjacent Playa de Levante, known for its discos, the west beach is more suited to those who want relaxation and a little less hustle and bustle. Of course, do not expect the calm of an isolated cove: it is still a city beach, but a surprisingly beautiful one.
Its easy accessibility and numerous facilities make it suitable for families and senior citizens, while the sports facilities and the possibility of diving in the azure waters attract a younger audience.
The area of Playa de Poniente is one of the most touristy in Benidorm, with plenty of hotels, shops, bars and restaurants, but it is less party-like than the neighbouring Playa de Levante, where most of the nightclubs are concentrated.
The beach is equipped with all the essential facilities. You can spend lazy days basking in the sun, bathing in the azure blue sea, playing football, beach volleyball, water sports or diving, and the little ones can play in the area reserved for them.
Also in Playa de Poniente, a pedestrian promenade with stalls, kiosks, bars and restaurants extends parallel to the beach.
At one end of Playa de Poniente, just between this beach and the Levante beach, is a lovely panoramic terrace known as Balcón del Mediterranéo: it is the perfect place to wait for the sunset.
From the Playa de Poniente one can also admire the skyscrapers of Benidorm, which have become a symbol of the city. The contrast between the natural environment of the beach and these tall man-made constructions is truly impressive.
Of all the skyscrapers in Benidorm, the most famous and probably the most beautiful is Gran Hotel Bali, the tallest hotel in Spain. Until 2006, it held the record for the tallest building in Spain, which is now held by the Espacio tower in Madrid. It is 186 metres high and has 52 floors.
Another skyscraper that can be admired from the Playa de Poniente is In Tempo, a 180-metre-high building made up of twin towers joined by an elliptical cone at the top of the towers: the result is a sort of letter M.
Boat excursions depart from the Playa de Poniente to Benidorm Island, a small island opposite the city’s coastline, or along the coast via Denia and Altea.
Many boats have transparent bottoms, allowing tourists to admire the seabed and the many fish to be found in the area’s clear waters.
For many, Playa de Poniente is just ‘the other’ beach in Benidorm, quieter and more private, but watch out for the latest property developments! In fact, modern, state-of-the-art skyscrapers are being built here, increasingly housing hotels or luxury flats. The choice is vast and the situation can even get out of hand: choose the accommodation that suits you based on your budget and distance to the sea. Also consider parking if you are travelling with a hire car.
We offer a selection of hotels at Playa de Poniente to suit all categories of travellers. The most booked by tourists are the sea-facing hotels, often right on the beach. If you want to play it safe, choose one of the following: they are among the most booked hotels in Playa de Poniente, sorted by number of reviews.
If you prefer space, privacy and the ability to prepare your own meals to a hotel holiday, book a holiday home at Playa de Poniente. We recommend a few below, but in this case we advise you to book early because houses and apartments for rent at Playa de Poniente are in high demand.
Playa de Poniente stretches along the western part of the Benidorm coastline. It runs from the sports harbour to Tossal de la Cala, a cliff overlooking the sea from which – needless to say – there is a beautiful view of the entire beach.
The beach is about 45 km from the centre of Alicante and can be reached by car in about forty minutes. The cities of Alicante and Benidorm are also connected by bus and tram.
Playa de Poniente is located in Benidorm, in the heart of the city. Looking at it from above, it is the beach 'to the left' of the old town.
