Strolling through the old city of Alicante you will come across one of the wonders of the Valencian region: the Basilica of Santa Maria. Alicante’s oldest church, a magnificent example of Valencian Baroque architecture, is a true jewel of religious architecture.
It was built in the 14th century on the remains of an old mosque and, following a serious fire in the 15th century, was rebuilt; the asymmetrical towers were added in the 16th and 17th centuries. Easily recognisable by the two towers and the Baroque gateway, embellished with a statue of the Virgin Mary by sculptor Juan Bautista Borja, the beauty of its façade will magnetically draw you inside. Here you will be left speechless with wonder.
For an unforgettable mystical experience visit the church in August, during the celebrations of the Mystery of Elche.
The façade of the Basilica of Santa Maria is truly spectacular. Take your time to admire it at your leisure, first with an overall view and then lingering over the details of the precious decorations.
After taking your photographs, respectfully enter the interior and let yourself marvel at the beauty of this sacred temple.
During your visit pay particular attention to:
The basilica of Santa María is located in Plaza Santa María, in the heart of the old city of Alicante, and is easily accessible on foot. It is open every day of the year, but opening hours may vary depending on religious celebrations and events.
The streets around the basilica of Santa Maria are full of flats, especially Calle de la Villavieja immediately to the north and Calle Jorge Juan immediately to the south. If you want to stay right in front of the basilica, there are two flats in Plaza de Santa Maria, as well as a small hotel practically next door,Hotel La Milagrosa.
Remember, however, that the basilica of Santa Maria is in a privileged location in Alicante, a stone’s throw from the beach, the marina and the historic centre, so whichever establishment you find within a 5-10 minute walk, you will be able to both visit the church without any problems and get to the other sights the city has to offer in no time at all.
The Basilica of Santa Maria is located in the Plaza de Santa Maria, a very strategically placed square, very close to practically all the best of Alicante. In fact, it is only a 5-minute walk from the Playa del Postiguet, a 5-minute walk from the Explanada de Espana and a 5-minute walk from Plaza del Carmen, where the houses of the Barrio de Santa Cruz begin.
Its location is so central that there are no bus stops nearby. If you are coming from outside and have a rented car, a few metres to the north you will find a public car park along Calle de San Juan.
The basilica of Santa Maria of Alicante lies squeezed between the city centre and the Barri Vell, very close to the beach and next to the Placa de la Porta de la Mar: it practically represents the geographical centre of the heart of Alicante!
