The Monumental Arena of Las Ventas, known simply as Las Ventas, is the beating heart of Spanish bullfighting and one of the most iconic symbols of Madrid. This imposing building, with its unique architecture and rich history, attracts thousands of visitors every year, both bullfighting enthusiasts and tourists curious to discover this controversial Spanish tradition.
Built between 1922 and 1929 and designed by architect José Espeliús in the neo-mudéjar style, Las Ventas was officially inaugurated on 17 June 1931. With a capacity of almost 24,000 spectators, it is the largest in Spain and boasts an impressive 60-metre diameter arena. Its façade, decorated with elaborate ceramic tiles and exposed brickwork, is an architectural masterpiece that reflects the building’s cultural importance.
During the Spanish Civil War, the arena was used as an ammunition depot, only resuming taurine activities in 1939. Since then, Las Ventas has become the ‘Cathedral of Toreo’, hosting the famous Feria de San Isidro, the most important Taurine event in the world. The most famous matadors in history have been consecrated here, making the bullring the most coveted stage for professional bullfighters.
However, the bullring is at the centre of a heated debate on bullfighting, with growing opposition on ethical grounds contrasting with the argument for the preservation of a centuries-old tradition. This confrontation reflects the tensions between the preservation of cultural heritage and the evolution of social values, making Las Ventas not only a monument to bullfighting, but also a symbol of the challenges modern Spain faces in reconciling tradition and progress.
In addition to bullfights, Las Ventas offers guided tours throughout the year and houses a Taurino Museum displaying historical relics and costumes. Occasionally, the bullring is also used for concerts and cultural events, confirming its role as an architectural and tourist landmark in Madrid.
Easily accessible by public transport, the bullring is served by the Ventas metro station (lines 2 and 5) located just opposite the main entrance. Its central location makes it an unmissable stop for visitors to the Spanish capital, as it is well connected to other tourist attractions in the city.
The Monumental Arena of Las Ventas is located in the Salamanca district in the eastern part of Madrid.
