Tossa de Mar is a small town on the Costa Brava whose old centre rises on a hill overlooking the sea. A town with a history stretching back thousands of years, Tossa de Mar is a veritable open-air museum with prehistoric artefacts and testimonies that join Roman and medieval ones. However, Tossa was also an important centre in the modern age for artists and intellectuals such as Marc Chagall (1887 – 1985).

In addition to the rich historical, architectural and artistic heritage, there is the natural heritage of breathtaking beaches and a crystal-clear sea that has been awarded the Blue Flag title. Unlike other resorts on the coast such as Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar is less chaotic and crowded and allows its visitors to enjoy a relaxing stay.

Also not to be underestimated is the local gastronomic tradition that boasts excellent fish dishes such as simitomba, a fish stew served in many of the typical restaurants in the centre. Today, Tossa de Mar is known for being the only example of a medieval fortified town still present on the Costa Brava.

Things to do in Tossa de Mar

Founded over 2,000 years ago, Tossa de Mar is a very characteristic town that preserves many remains of its past. Surrounded by ancient fortified walls, the centre (known as Vila Vella) dates back to the medieval period (12th century) and has been declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument.

Vila Vella, the old town

117320, Girona, Spain

The Old Town is the symbol of Tossa de Mar as it is currently the only example of a fortified village still standing on the Catalan coast. Built at the beginning of the 13th century with crenellated walls, the centre is surrounded by the original town wall, which still retains 7 towers and a walkway.

The highest point was once occupied by the castle, which was later destroyed to make way for a lighthouse. The village consists of an intricate network of cobbled streets that are surrounded by old houses and churches. Only from the 16th century did the population begin to expand outside the walls through the district of Sa Roqueta.

Villa Romana dels Ametllers

2Av. Pelegrí, 17320 Tossa de Mar, Girona, Spain

Discovered in 1914 by Ignasi Melé, the Villa Romana dels Ametllers is a mansion built between the 1st and 5th centuries A.D. and is one of the most prestigious dwellings in the area. In fact, these territories were already famous in Roman times for the cultivation of vines and the production of high-quality wines that were then exported.

This is why the villa consists of two areas: the pars urbana and the pars fructuaria. The pars urbana or noble area of the complex was where the family lived and met guests. This was where the bath complex, the canteen, the nymphaeum (fountain) and the swimming pool were located. On the lower floor, on the other hand, was the pars fructuaria, the storage area. Here were the warehouses and rooms for processing agricultural products.

Torre de Can Magí

3Carrer del Tarull, 17320 Tossa de Mar, Girona, Spain

The Torre de Can Magí is also called Torre dels Moros and is one of the watchtowers built by Philip II in the 16th century on the Mediterranean coast. The tower was part of a defensive system designed to protect towns from pirate raids. Several towers were built at strategic points along the coast and communicated with each other by means of smoke signals during the day and light signals at night.

In the event of an attack, the population was warned so that they could protect themselves within the walls and prepare to defend themselves. The Torre de Can Magí consists of two floors with a wooden floor, embrasures and barbican; this tower communicated with the tower of Pólvora and most probably also with the tower of the castle, which is no longer there today.

Chapel of Our Lady of Succour

4Plaça Espanya, 1, 17320 Tossa de Mar, Girona, Spain

The Chapel of Our Lady of Succour was built around the 16th century by a sailor, Antoni Caixa, as thanks to the Virgin Mary who had saved him from a shipwreck. Located in what was once known as Camp de la Creu, as it was the site of a cross, the chapel stood at the crossroads from where the roads to Girona and Lloret started.

Because of this strategic location, the Chapel of Our Lady of Succour quickly became an important prayer centre for sailors and traders. The chapel as we can admire it today is the result of renovations that took place in the 18th century.

Sant Vicenç de Tossa

5Carrer Pou de la Vila, 6, 17320 Tossa de Mar, Girona, Spain

The Parish Church of Sant Vicenç was built in the mid-18th century because the old parish church had become too small to accommodate all the faithful. Built in the Neoclassical style, this religious building featured altarpieces and Baroque-style decorations inside, most of which, however, were lost during the civil war.

Tossa de Mar Municipal Museum

6Plaça Pintor Roig Soler, 1, 17320 Tossa de Mar, Girona, Spain

Located in the former Casa del Sac that was the Governor’s House, the Municipal Museum was inaugurated on 1 September 1935 and became the first contemporary art museum in Spain. The museum was founded by a group of intellectuals and art lovers with the intention of creating an exhibition site and cultural centre. Tossa de Mar had already been a place of inspiration for many artists and intellectuals in the 19th century and became an important avant-garde centre in the 20th century.

Rafael Benet, Pere Creixams, Marc Chagall, André Masson and Georges Kars are just some of the exponents who lived in Tossa and left some of their works here. The museum currently houses many creations by 19th and 20th century Spanish artists, as well as many archaeological finds and objects discovered at the site of Villa Ametllers.

Beaches of Tossa de Mar

Tossa de Mar boasts a long coastline characterised by beautiful, well-equipped and neat beaches.

Platja Gran

7Platja Gran, 17320 Tossa de Mar, Girona, Spain

La Platja Gran is Tossa’s main beach, a wide expanse of golden sand stretching over 380 metres at the foot of Vila Vella. This unique location allows one to enjoy the sea against the backdrop of the medieval walls, creating a truly evocative atmosphere.

The beach is fully equipped with all the necessary services: showers, sunbeds and parasols for hire, shaded areas and water activities. The crystal-clear waters and gently sloping seabed make it ideal for families with children. The promenade is dotted with restaurants and bars where you can enjoy local cuisine overlooking the sea.

Es Codolar

8Carrer del Portal, 34, 17320 Tossa de Mar, Girona, Spain

The beach of Es Codolar, hidden behind the walls of Vila Vella, is a small pebbly bay offering crystal-clear waters and a more intimate atmosphere than Platja Gran. It is the ideal starting point for exploring the secret coves accessible via the Camí de Ronda, the old customs path that runs along the coastline.

Along the way you can discover hidden corners such as Cala Bona and Cala Pola, small oases of peace that can only be reached on foot or by boat. These coves preserve their natural beauty intact and are perfect for snorkelling, thanks to their seabed rich in marine life and transparent waters.
