Lying on the beautiful Catalan Costa Brava, Lloret de Mar is one of Spain’s liveliest beach destinations. This town, which combines the charm of medieval history with the dynamism of a modern tourist resort, is distinguished by its golden sandy beaches alternating with picturesque rocky coves. Its historical centre preserves valuable vestiges of its maritime and commercial past, while the seafront teems with life with its numerous clubs, restaurants and leisure activities.

The mix of cultural heritage and entertainment makes Lloret de Mar an ideal destination for families and couples seeking a holiday that balances seaside relaxation, cultural discovery and fun. Its strategic location also makes it easy to explore some of the Costa Brava‘s most fascinating locations.

Lloret de Mar Beach

The Playa de Lloret is the city’s main beach, a wide expanse of golden sand over 1.5 kilometres long. This urban beach, awarded the Blue Flag for the quality of its water and services, is the heart of the resort’s beach life.

Equipped with every comfort, from the presence of lifeguards to sunbed and umbrella rentals, the beach also offers numerous water activities such as windsurfing, kayaking and parasailing. The seafront promenade that runs along it is livened up by restaurants, bars and ice-cream parlours, making it perfect for families with children and for those looking for a relaxing day out without sacrificing comfort.

The beach is characterised by its gradually sloping seabed, making it particularly safe for children and ideal for swimming. The crystal-clear water allows for snorkelling, especially in the areas closest to the rocks bordering the bay. During the summer season, the beach is equipped with full facilities including showers, public toilets, first aid points and children’s play areas.

The pedestrian promenade that runs along the beach is one of the liveliest spots in the city, particularly attractive at sunset when it becomes the ideal place for a relaxing stroll. The presence of numerous chiringuitos (characteristic beach bars) allows one to enjoy cool drinks and tapas right on the sand. During the high season, the beach also hosts events and entertainment activities, from beach volleyball tournaments to outdoor fitness sessions.

Where to stay in Lloret de Mar

The centre of Lloret de Mar practically ends at the long beach. This is ideal for combining beach life and enjoying the resort, with its shops during the day and its legendary nightclubs at night. The hotel offer is very wide, you won’t find better and the decision of where to stay will only depend on your budget. You can choose small hostels or unpretentious flats, mostly in the centre, or excellent hotels with a spa, swimming pool and all the amenities, located mostly on the east side of the beach.

The waterfront area is ideal for those who want to be in the heart of the action, with easy access to the main beach and nightlife. This area offers mainly medium to large hotels, many with swimming pools and all-inclusive facilities, perfect for families.

A little quieter is the Playa de Fenals area, where there are also several 4- and 5-star hotels.

Things to do in Lloret de Mar

Lloret de Mar offers an interesting combination of attractions ranging from natural beauty to cultural and historical heritage. Its Blue Flag-certified beaches alternate with modernist gardens and ancient fortifications, creating a varied and engaging sightseeing itinerary for all types of travellers.

Castell de Sant Joan

Perched on a promontory overlooking the town, Castell de Sant Joan is one of the most iconic symbols of Lloret de Mar. This 11th century medieval fortress served as a lookout point to protect the coast from pirate raids. Today, although mainly the remains of the main tower remain, the castle offers one of the most spectacular views of the bay and the Costa Brava.

The climb to the castle, although challenging, offers breathtaking views stretching from Lloret to Blanes and beyond. At sunset, this place becomes particularly impressive, when the last light of day dyes the ancient stones and the Mediterranean Sea pink.

Jardins de Santa Clotilde

The Jardins de Santa Clotilde represent one of the finest examples of 20th-century Italian Renaissance-style gardens in Catalonia. Designed in 1919 by architect Nicolau Rubió i Tudurí, these terraced gardens overlook the sea, creating views of rare beauty.

The garden is developed through a skilful interplay of staircases, terraces and fountains that blend in perfectly with the Mediterranean vegetation. Classical statues, strategically arranged among geometric hedges and neat paths, contribute to creating an atmosphere of great elegance. The privileged location also offers splendid views of the sea, making these gardens a must for photography enthusiasts.

Church of Sant Romà

The Church of Sant Romà, with its characteristic Catalan Gothic architecture, dominates the historical centre of Lloret de Mar. Built in the 16th century, the church features stylistic elements ranging from Gothic to modernism, testimony to the various phases of construction and restoration.

Of particular interest is the chapel of the Santissimo, decorated in the early 20th century with modernist elements, including beautiful mosaics and stained glass windows. The polychrome façade, with its geometric motifs and maritime decorations, tells of the deep connection between the city and the sea.

Camino de Ronda

The Camino de Ronda (Camí de Ronda in Catalan) is an impressive coastal path that connects the different beaches and coves of Lloret de Mar. This scenic path, part of a larger system of routes that runs along the entire Costa Brava, offers some of the most spectacular views of the area.

The section through Lloret is particularly well-preserved and provides access to beautiful hidden coves such as Cala Banys and Sa Caleta. During the route, which can be completed in about two hours, one can admire the Mediterranean vegetation, rock formations and crystal-clear waters that characterise this stretch of coastline.

Entertainment of all kinds

Undoubtedly, Lloret de Mar is a destination taken by storm by young people from all over Europe who simply want to spend their holidays having fun. The city is full of opportunities for recreation, such as a go-kart track, tennis courts, bowling alleys and much more. It is also home to Europe’s largest water park, Water World.

For water sports enthusiasts, it is possible to go scuba diving by renting equipment, or go kayaking and snorkelling, activities that are also accessible for beginners and anyone who wants to try something new without too much effort.

For nightlife, Lloret de Mar has a huge choice of bars and discos, many of which stay open until the morning. Many bars are literally stormed by British tourists and are ideal for watching football matches on television. Due to the many bars selling alcohol, some young people on holiday tend to drink more than they should, however, the local police are very present.

How to get to Lloret de Mar

If your departure city has a flight to Girona airport, don’t think twice and book it, as it is quick and easy to get to Lloret de Mar from there. Unfortunately, however, the Girona airport, once a real Ryanair stronghold, is now experiencing a setback for logistical and political reasons, so you may not be able to find a flight that suits your needs.

If this is the case, choose Barcelona International Airport without delay, and continue by public transport: there is a direct bus, line 2 to Tossa de Mar, leaving every 60 minutes from both airport terminals, operated by the SARFA company. The stop in Lloret is a little outside the city, at the intersection of Avinguda Vila de Blanes and Avinguda America.

If, on the other hand, once off the plane you want to visit Barcelona first and only then arrive in Lloret de Mar, you can take the same bus, as it makes an intermediate stop at the Estaciò del Nord.
