The Font Màgica de Montjuïc is one of Barcelona’s most spectacular attractions. It is located in Plaza de Espanya and was built for the 1929 Universal Exhibition by Carles Buïgas on the same site as Josep Puig i Cadafalch’s Four Columns , demolished in 1928 by Primo de Rivera.
Both the fountain and the adjacent Palacio Nacional were built for the Universal Exhibition. The work has an elliptical shape and features no less than 30 water features, each with its own particular colouring based on a combination of the five colours used: yellow, blue, green, red and white. The fountain was built by Westinghouse engineers, while the music accompanying the games was incorporated much later, only in the 1980s.

The Font Màgica in Barcelona has many different choreographies, ranging from modern musical performances to classical music and a remix of 20th and 21st century songs. One of the signature songs of all the shows is of course ‘Barcelona’, performed by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé. The Font Magica uses a water recirculation system following the introduction of an anti-drought decree by the Catalan government in 2008.
The Font Magica is one of the most visited and best-loved monuments in the whole city of Barcelona: every year some 2.5 million people come to see these magnificent spectacles, making the attraction one of the most admired in the city. One of the best nights to enjoy La Font Màgica de Montjuïc is undoubtedly New Year’s Eve where most of the celebrations are concentrated.
To attend the shows at the Font Màgica, reservations are not necessary, and no entrance ticket is required as they are completely free of charge. There are no seats to enjoy the shows and there are no entry points. Visitors can go to the fountain at any time, including during the music, light and water shows.
An original way to visit the Magic Fountain is with a guided tour, on foot or by bicycle, with an expert guide who will also show you other attractions in Montjuïc. We recommend the following ones.
You can admire the Font Magica de Montjuic at the end of Avenida de la Reina Maria Cristina, an elegant street that starts at Placa d'Espanya, crosses the Venetian Towers and reaches the foot of Montjuic hill, with the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya behind it.
City Card allow you to save on public transport and / or on the entrances to the main tourist attractions.
