The Joan Miró Foundation is a cultural institution in Barcelona dedicated to the great Catalan painter. Founded by Joan Miró himself in 1971, and located in a building designed by Josep Lluís Sert, this gallery brings together the world’s finest public collection of the artist’s work.
It contains almost 300 paintings, 150 sculptures, more than 5,000 drawings and his entire graphic oeuvre. Joan Miró, undisputed genius of surrealism and one of Spain’s most famous painters can be recognised in every detail of the Foundation.
The idea to create it came in 1968 from Miró himself, who wanted to transform the building into an element that would follow the trends in contemporary art, with the desire to make his works available to the public at all times.
The Joan Miró Foundation was officially established in 1975 and its first board of trustees was composed of members elected by Miró himself. The Fundació was the first art institution in Barcelona to be born from the collaboration between an artist and an architect, namely Miró and Josep Lluís Sert. The latter, a pupil of Le Corbusier, designed the building, among the most emblematic as public architecture in Barcelona, constructed as a sum of horizontal volumes.

The Fundació Joan Miró contains more than 104,000 pieces including paintings, sculptures and tapestries. As far as drawings are concerned, it is interesting to note that the Foundation safeguards almost all of Joan Miró’s preparatory drawings.
The collection mainly consists of an initial donation from Joan Miró’s wife Pilar Juncosa, as well as other artists, various family members and other public and private collections.
The collection is completed by other donations or deposits from people such as Aimé Maeght, Pierre Matisse, Kazumasa Katsuta, Manuel de Muga, Josep Royo, Josep Lluís Sert and well-known Barcelona families such as the Farreras Casanovas or the Viladàs Jene. This makes it one of the most meticulous collections of works by Joan Miró. It is a complete itinerary, from his first drawings to the large paintings that characterised the last phase of his life.
