Casa Batlló

Casa Batllò is located along Passeig de Gracia, and is one of Gaudí's greatest expressions and at the same time one of Barcelona's most visited monuments

The Casa Batlló is a work by architect Antoni Gaudí, the greatest representative of Catalan Modernism. It is a complete renovation of an existing building designed by Emilio Sala Cortés. It is located at number 43 Passeig de Gracia, the wide avenue running through the Eixample district from Plaza Catalunya.

It is one of the four buildings in the so-called Manzana de la discordia, a block that is home to other works by modernist architects: the Casa Amatller, which borders Josep Puig i Cadafalch’s Casa Batllò, Lluís Domènech i Montaner’s Casa Lleó Morera, Enric Sagnier i Villavecchia’s Casa Mulleras and Marcellià Coquillat’s Casa Josefina Bonet. The building was constructed between 1904 and 1906.

Casa Batlló is a reflection of Gaudí’s artistic fullness: it belongs to his naturalistic phase (first decade of the 20th century), the period in which the architect perfected his personal style inspired by the organic forms of nature, putting into practice a series of new structural solutions derived from in-depth analyses of geometry.

To this Gaudí associated a great creative freedom and a decidedly imaginative ornamental creation: starting from a certain Baroque style, his works succeeded in acquiring great structural richness and forms, devoid of volumes of rationalist rigidity or any classical references.

Functionality First

The chimneys on the roof of Casa Batllò

Gaudí presented the renovation project of Casa Batlló at the age of 52, when the fashions of the mid-19th century were outdated, and his architectural style had transcended academicism to reflect a personal vision of architecture, originality and innovation. However, as usual in Gaudí’s work, the building was conceived under the prism of functionality, which the architect subordinated to all other elements.

In this regard, it is worth noting the importance given to lighting and ventilation, two fundamental axes for healthy and comfortable living in a residential building. This is why Gaudí thought of a large central courtyard in the centre of the building, onto which the service dwellings faced, while the master bedrooms faced the façade. This courtyard was also articulated inside the building by stairs and a lift.

Basic data and layout of the rooms

The Casa Batlló occupies a total area of 4300 square metres, with 450 square metres on each floor. It is 32 metres high and 14.5 metres wide, greatly increasing the proportions of the previous construction, which was 21 metres high and occupied 3100 square metres.

The building has eight storeys: at street level there is a basement, intended for the supply of coal and the storage of materials; the ground floor was initially dedicated to the garage and later used as a warehouse, and next to the entrance to the house was a shop, first occupied by the Lumière photographic studio, then by the Pathé Frères film production company and finally by the Syra Gallery; the first floor was occupied entirely by the Batllò family, and also contains a large courtyard at the back of the building; the other four floors were intended for rent, two flats each; finally there is a mezzanine service area.
