Los Cristianos

Among the main tourist centres of Tenerife is Los Cristianos, with its beaches and resorts. Lying on the south coast, it has a mild climate all year round.

It is hard to imagine separating Los Cristianos from Playa de Las Americas, both geographically and in terms of urban planning. They are undoubtedly the most tourist resorts in all of Tenerife, which together with neighbouring Costa Adeje receive over 5 million tourists a year, and are practically attached to each other. Situated at the southern end of the island, perhaps the feature that makes it unique is the presence of the marina, from which ferries also depart for La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro, the three minor islands that complete the Canarian archipelago alongside the four most famous and visited ones.

Inhabited since the 1860s, Los Cristianos was for years a tiny fishing village until it received an incredible boost from tourism in the 1950s, a sector that now employs practically all the permanent residents, most of whom are even northern Europeans transplanted to live in the Canarian sun.

Beaches of Los Cristianos

There are two beaches in Los Cristianos: the town beach, overlooking the harbour and simply called Playa de Los Cristianos, and the small Playa de los Tarajales, located east of the harbour. The neighbouring Playa de Las Vistas, on the other hand, located just across the harbour, is already part of the Playa de Las Americas area, but can be easily reached on foot from the centre of Los Cristianos.

Of the two beaches in Los Cristianos, the town beach is undoubtedly the most popular, if only because of its size: it is about 300 metres long, and in places even more than 50 metres wide. The beach, which is completely sandy, is partly equipped, although there are also some free sections where you can lay out your towel in peace and quiet and enjoy the Canarian sun. However, being the largest beach in the resort, forget about being alone! In summer and during holiday periods it can get very crowded.

At Los Cristianos beach there is also the possibility of staying active by playing sports, thanks to the presence of two beach volleyball courts and a sailing school. The beach’s services are mainly provided by the establishments located on the beautiful pedestrian promenade that surrounds it, the Avenida Juan Alfonso Batista: here one after another of bars, cafés, restaurants, ice-cream parlours, fast food outlets and so on can be found.

The second beach in Los Cristianos, as mentioned, is Playa de Los Tarajales. It is a much smaller beach than the town beach, and is also much less extensive in both length and width. Sandy and stony at the same time, behind it is a pedestrian promenade lined with the numerous outdoor tables of bars, restaurants and tapas bars. The atmosphere here is certainly different, more relaxed, yet it is still a beach in one of the busiest locations in the Canaries!

Where to stay in Los Cristianos

There are plenty of options for sleeping in Los Cristianos to suit all holiday needs and budgets. They range from small pensions and guest houses located in the narrow streets of the centre, to the large resorts and residences in the eastern area, the one to the right of Avenida Juan Carlos I. Between all-inclusive hotels and guest houses, the offer of accommodation in Los Cristianos is wide and varied, and almost always equipped with all the necessary comforts for a wonderful holiday in the south of Tenerife.

Things to do in Los Cristianos

As a resort that developed from nothing in the 1950s for tourism only, there is not much to see in Los Cristianos. However, it is pleasant to stroll around its streets, especially Avenida Suecia, which is one of the most important shopping streets. Also nice is the Plaza Iglesia de Nuestra Senora del Carmen, overlooked by the beautiful church of the same name, one of the few vestiges of Los Cristianos’ past. On one side is a beautiful staircase on which a mural called ‘Sentarse‘, by Alba González Fernández, has been painted. The streets surrounding the church, including Avenida Los Playeros, are almost all pedestrianised, and are packed with shops, bazaars, bars and restaurants.

Interestingly, there are two natural viewpoints within the resort: they are the Montana Chayofita, which ideally marks the boundary line between Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas, and the Monumento Natural de la Montana de Guaza, a promontory located on the eastern border of Los Cristianos that can be climbed on foot or by jeep, from the top of which one has a beautiful view of the southern coast of Tenerife.

How to get to Los Cristianos

Getting to Los Cristianos is easy, as it is located quite close to Tenerife South Airport, from which it is about 16 kilometres away, a distance that can be easily covered in less than 20 minutes by taking the TF-1 road heading west to exit 72 Los Cristianos – Arona – El Teide. From there, you can easily reach your destination in less than a kilometre along Avenida Juan Carlos I.
