Loro Parque, which means ‘parrot park’ in Spanish, is a 13-hectare zoo in the immediate surroundings of Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife. Inaugurated in 1972, it houses a reserve of animals and plants of different species.
Initially conceived as a paradise for parrots, it has developed over the years into one of the most popular attractions in the Canary Islands, with more than 40 million visitors a year.
But Loro Parque is not just a theme park. All kinds of exhibitions are held daily in specially designed pavilions featuring plants and animals.
Inside Loro Parque there is a huge garden where you can admire many orchids at close quarters, of different shapes, colours and sizes.
There are around 200 species of orchids in Europe, some of which are terrestrial, while others cannot tolerate mineral water. At Loro Parque they survive because they are only given demineralised water.
The aquarium at Loro Parque consists of 12 different themed exhibits, with a total of no less than 1.2 million litres of water. All the water used for the aquarium is taken directly from the Atlantic Ocean, which is only 150 metres from the park.
The water, which is already of excellent quality, is filtered, treated and sterilised through a system that guarantees optimal conditions for each tank.
Planet Penguin is a true paradise for lovers of these cute animals. Inside the Loro Parque, a miniature Antarctic polar environment has been reproduced, which to date is the largest in the world.
There you can find real snow, a huge iceberg and of course hundreds of penguins. This miniature world is unanimously considered one of the best human reproductions of natural living conditions; the ideal habitat for these curious and entertaining animals, loved by young and old alike.
Did you know that the largest Thai village outside Thailand is located in Tenerife? It is the Thai Village, the first structure you see when entering Loro Parque: it was meticulously built down to the smallest detail to give visitors a warm welcome.
Back in 1913, the then Prince Mahidol of Siam visited Tenerife and was impressed by its beautiful nature. For this reason, he jotted down numerous notes in his travel diary, remembering the island forever.
Today, the bust of the Prince located at the park’s entrance is a symbol of the strong bond that exists between Thailand, Tenerife and Loro Parque.
Naturavision is the name of the cinema at Loro Parque, built under a huge glass dome. Here Rio 3D, the story of a macaque told in a spectacular, entertaining and educational way, is projected in a 3D version designed especially for the Loro Parque.
Admission to Naturavision is free with the park ticket, and the film is available in three languages: Spanish, English and German.
Inside Loro Parque, visitors will be amazed by the many animals they can see at close range. Mammals include gorillas and savannah dwellers such as jaguars, lions and tigers.
Don’t miss a stop at the dolphinarium, where experienced trainers entertain the public with exciting shows with dolphins, seals and sea lions, which are held at regular intervals and are free with the admission ticket.
Also not to be missed is the orca stadium called Orca Ocean, where these huge water giants are made to jump and dance.
The six orcas living at Loro Parque have in fact developed a very close relationship with their instructors, a natural consequence of the fact that they play and train together day after day. Play is indeed a very important part of the orcas’ management, as it keeps them happy and in good physical condition.
But Orca Ocean is not just an exhibition of orcas: it is also an ambitious project developed by Loro Parque and the US-based Sea World to create awareness among visitors of the importance of protecting the seas and oceans.
Since its inauguration in 1972, Loro Parque has created the most developed parrot reserve in the world, with more than 4000 parrots belonging to over 350 species and subspecies, donated to the Loro Parque Fundacion by private individuals and companies.
The parrots of Loro Parque are one of the reasons to visit the park, to admire them up close and learn many things about these beautiful and strange creatures.
Day tickets for adults can be purchased online, as can combination tickets, which also include trasnfer or entrance to Siam Park, another theme park in Tenerife run by the same ownership.
Admission to the park is free for children under the age of 6, while there are reductions for children aged 6 to 11. Residents of the Canary Islands are also entitled to reductions.
The Loro Parque is one of the most famous and visited attractions in Tenerife. If you would like to buy your tickets online and thus avoid long queues at the entrance, click here.
If you would like to combine your entrance to Loro Parque with a visit to Siam Park, or add a transfer, you can purchase a single ticket from the ones below.
You can get to Loro Parque by a convenient free train, which leaves from the Reyes Catolicos square in Puerto de la Cruz every 20 minutes. The first train leaves at 9am. On the return journey, the last train leaves Loro Parque at 18:45.
Those staying in the south of Tenerife can take advantage of the transfer service available 7 days a week, depending on the departure point. You can book it online, as well as see routes and timetables.
Alternatively, it is possible to get to Loro Parque by hire car. The signage is clear and finding it is easy, being just east of Puerto de la Cruz. It remains the least recommended option, however, as parking can sometimes be quite difficult.
Loro Parque is located within the municipal area of Puerto de La Cruz, halfway between the Jardìn and Los Roques beaches. Sleeping in Puerto de la Cruz is the best choice, given the abundance of three- and four-star hotels and flats. Incidentally, Puerto de la Cruz is one of the few places in Tenerife where there are more hotels than flats. Reaching Loro Parque is very easy thanks to the tourist train that passes through the city centre and leads right to the entrance of the park.
The Loro Parque is located on Avenida Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz, about 30 kilometres from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is located about 2 kilometres west of the city centre and the seafront.
