If you have decided to spend your holiday in Tenerife, all you have to do is search for accommodation. The island is the largest of the Canary Islands and although the distance between places may not seem too great, you will have to look for a location that best suits your needs.
It all depends on what you are looking for from your holiday: a simple place to relax in the sun and enjoy the ocean or a romantic spot? Or perhaps you are planning a family holiday and want the right place for your children? Tenerife is the perfect island for all this. Here are some of the most popular areas with directions where to stay.
Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, is a popular stop for cruise ships. The city is full of shops, markets, botanical gardens, art galleries and restaurants to satisfy every taste, a place for a city break and of course the best place to experience Carnaval!
The locals’ favourite beach is Playa de las Teresitas, with golden sand, crystal clear sea and palm trees, which can be reached by the 910 bus. The waves here are gentle, making it a suitable beach for families.
Los Cristianos has gone from being a picturesque fishing village to a popular destination for families and tourists. Shopping enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that the village’s pedestrian streets are home to a wide range of shops, selling everything from souvenirs to clothing, from handicrafts to beauty products.
During the day, it will be possible to take part in various water activities, including numerous sports, whale and dolphin watching tours and deep-sea fishing. The Jungle Park is a short drive away.
Los Cristianos is also home to two large beaches, one of which has a free service for those with limited mobility in wheelchairs.
Not far away is Playa de las Americas, an area that has undergone a rich renovation. Today it is populated with high-fashion shops, international brands and extravagant landscapes that will make you feel like you are in Las Vegas.
The golden sands and turquoise waters coupled with a thriving and energetic nightlife scene make it the ideal place for those who want to enjoy the best of Tenerife in terms of services and well-being.
Puerto de La Cruz is the main tourist resort in the north of the island. It was originally a small fishing village, so much so that many of the town’s squares, churches and old houses date back to that time.
Tourism began in the 1960s, with visitors from cruise ships landing in nearby Santa Cruz. But it was not until the 1970s that the resort became a popular holiday destination for tourists seeking comfort and services.
Today, Puerto la Cruz is known as a sophisticated, exotic and tropical village. The culture of the Canary Islands is very much in evidence here. In fact, outside the hotels, bars and restaurants, English is not widely spoken and the nightlife is not rowdy and noisy as in other locations. Canarios prefer to relax with a bottle of wine in one of the many bars that fill Puerto’s squares and old cobbled streets.
It is difficult to mark the boundary between the towns of Puerto de Santiago, Playa de la Arena and Los Gigantes; all three are close and it is easy to move from one to the other.
Most of the area’s Spanish residents are in Puerto de Santiago, so you can experience a holiday in touch with the Canarian spirit. There are plenty of buildings under construction, but also numerous family bars, restaurants, a choice of shops and all-inclusive hotels.
These resorts often attract older visitors looking for a quieter base. If you decide to stay here, it is recommended to rent a car, as local transport is scarce and you will be able to explore the surroundings more easily.
If what you are looking for in Tenerife is an alternative holiday away from the usual popular places, you can consider staying in the inland areas. This will make for a holiday in contact with nature.
You can usually sleep in independent flats and cottages, which are also rented out for short periods. In this way, you will come into contact with the island’s most ancient traditions. Some of the places we propose are the villages in the Anaga Rural Park, the area around Las Portelas, or the village of Tazacorte and the historical district of Arico in the south of the island.
