Tenerife South Airport (TFS), also known as Reina Sofia Airport, is located along the southern coast of the island, in the heart of the tourist area 60 kilometres from the capital Santa Cruz, and is one of two airports serving Tenerife.
The airport, the second largest in terms of passengers in the Canary Islands archipelago after Gran Canaria Airport, is located a short distance from El Medano, Los Abrigos, San Miguel and Granadilla de Abona.
Larger and busier than Tenerife North Airport, Tenerife South is home to more than 40 airlines, including Ryanair, easyJet and Vueling, and offers direct flights to airports throughout Europe . The airport is also well connected with airports in Boston, Las Vegas, Chicago, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.
Outside the terminal of Tenerife South airport , there are no hotels or facilities where you can sleep, so the bad news is that if you arrive late in the evening you will still have to make a journey, either by taxi, public transport or hire car. But fortunately you won’t have to travel very far, as a short distance to the west, moving along the coast, are the resorts of San Miguel de Abona and Golf del Sur, with plenty of hotels, residences, flats and general accommodation facilities.
Moving east from the airport along the coast you will instead find the equally touristy El Medano, with its renowned beach. Here, too, there is no shortage of hotels, flats and various facilities where to stay.
Arriving at Tenerife South Airport from the main tourist resorts on the island is very easy, as it is directly connected to the TF-1 road, the main thoroughfare of all Tenerife. From here you can easily reach Los Cristianos, Playa de Las Americas and Costa Adeje in a maximum of 15 minutes by car, or 25-30 minutes by bus number 40 or 343.
If, on the other hand, you want to get to Tenerife South Airport from a city in the north, such as Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the journey is much longer. It takes about 40 minutes by car and almost an hour by bus, line 10, which stops at the tourist office at the Intercambiador de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, not far from the Auditorio.
The only public transport available at Tenerife South Airport is the bus.
Taxis stop outside the terminal, but to get around easily and reach all the most important places of interest we recommend hiring a car.
To rent a car in Tenerife we always recommend comparing the rates of all companies with DiscoverCars because in our opinion it offers the best prices, allows cancellation up to 48 hours before rental and offers a very cheap comprehensive insurance policy.
An alternative to TAXIs is to book in advance a private transfer to or from Santa Cruz de Tenerife airport. A driver will pick you up at the airport arrivals (thus avoiding taxi queues), at your hotel or wherever you prefer, to take you to the desired address.
It is the best solution if you do not want to waste time, do not want to use public transport, have a lot of luggage or are travelling in a group. To book a private transfer to or from Santa Cruz de Tenerife airport visit this site.
