Tenerife North Airport (TFN), one of two on the island (the other being Tenerife South), is located in the northern part of Tenerife, 2 kilometres from San Cristobal de la Laguna and only 11 kilometres from the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Mainly used for domestic flights, especially for connections to major Spanish cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga and Valencia, the airport concentrates over 40% of its traffic for connections to the other islands of the Canary archipelago: Gran Canaria, La Palma, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, El Hierro and La Gomera. Tenerife North Airport is one of Binter Canarias’ hubs.
Once you leave the terminal at Tenerife North Airport, you won’t find any facilities where you can sleep. But if you want maximum rest if your flight arrives late in the evening, or if you are scheduled to take off early in the morning, don’t worry: you will be able to find several beds in the vicinity. The reason is easily said: the airport is practically in the city.
We are talking about the city of San Cristobal de La Laguna, which is definitely touristy (although not on the sea) and therefore full of accommodations: ranging from hotels to flats, passing through rural houses and boutique hotels. You will find everything, and above all you can consider it a good base to sleep in, regardless of whether you want to sleep near the airport.
Getting to Tenerife North Airport is easy if you are in the northern part of the island. It is located right next to the TF-5 road, also known as Autopista del Norte, which connects Puerto de la Cruz to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Therefore, if you want to reach it from either of these two cities, all you have to do is take the TF-5 and follow the opposite direction. From Santa Cruz it takes about 10-15 minutes and from Puerto de la Cruz about twice as long. Local public transport buses are also available (line 30 from Puerto de la Cruz and line 20 from Santa Cruz), but the journey time is much longer: count on double the time.
If, on the other hand, for some reason you have decided to leave from Tenerife North but your holiday destination was in the south, the journey will be much longer. It takes about an hour’s drive from Playa de Las Americas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje to get to Tenerife North airport, or about an hour and 45 minutes by bus number 343.
The only public transport connecting the airport are buses:
There are also taxis outside the arrivals terminal, but in general our advice is to hire a car to get around easily.
To rent a car in Tenerife we always recommend comparing the rates of all companies with DiscoverCars because in our opinion it offers the best prices, allows cancellation up to 48 hours before rental and offers a very cheap comprehensive insurance policy.
An alternative to TAXIs is to book in advance a private transfer to or from Santa Cruz de Tenerife airport. A driver will pick you up at the airport arrivals (thus avoiding taxi queues), at your hotel or wherever you prefer, to take you to the desired address.
It is the best solution if you do not want to waste time, do not want to use public transport, have a lot of luggage or are travelling in a group. To book a private transfer to or from Santa Cruz de Tenerife airport visit this site.
