With over 1 million tourists each year, Puerto del Carmen is the main tourist resort on the island of Lanzarote. Located in the south-eastern part of the island, it is only a ten-minute drive from Arrecife airport and is an ideal base from which to visit the many tourist and cultural attractions the island has to offer.
Like many other places on Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen was originally a fishing village; the old harbour still retains the atmosphere of yesteryear and it is there that you can eat excellent freshly caught fish.
The main street of the ‘new’ part of Puerto del Carmen is Avenida de Las Playas, 7 kilometres of promenade flanking the beaches on one side and shops and shopping centres such as the brand new Biosfera Plaza on the other.
Kilometres of beautiful beaches and dreamy resorts make Puerto del Carmen the destination for anyone who wants to enjoy a beach holiday but also fun and nightlife, being the area of Lanzarote with the highest concentration of bars, clubs and discos.
Puerto del Carmen is the main tourist resort on Lanzarote, which is why finding accommodation is certainly not difficult. It becomes so if you want exactly the right hotel or flat for you and your intended holiday style. So there are solutions to suit all tastes and budgets, from luxury hotels to holiday villages, from small flats to residential complexes.
The choice of accommodation in Puerto del Carmen is wide, but we recommend staying close to the beach if you are planning a beach holiday without moving too much. On the contrary, we recommend moving away from the centre if you have a rental car and if your idea is to explore all of Lanzarote. In this case, staying close to the centre would be penalising and difficult from a parking point of view.
We offer a selection of hotels at Puerto del Carmen to suit all categories of travellers. The most booked by tourists are the sea-facing hotels, often right on the beach. If you want to play it safe, choose one of the following: they are among the most booked hotels in Puerto del Carmen, sorted by number of reviews.
If you prefer space, privacy and the ability to prepare your own meals to a hotel holiday, book a holiday home at Puerto del Carmen. We recommend a few below, but in this case we advise you to book early because houses and apartments for rent at Puerto del Carmen are in high demand.
If you are a fan of diving and scuba diving, Puerto del Carmen is your dream destination, thanks to its clear waters, its beaches sheltered by rocks and the Atlantic Ocean at your disposal.
But Puerto del Carmen is also suitable for the less sporty who want to spend the morning on the beach and the afternoon shopping among the many shops along the Avenida de Las Playas promenade.
The town is undoubtedly a tourist resort, but it is also one of the few that has retained its authentic soul, identifiable with the old town and the charming little harbour, a reminder of the old fishing village.
The original town centre of Puerto del Carmen has not been affected by new construction and has remained exactly as it was, retaining the atmosphere of the old fishing village.
The harbour is one of the symbols of the old town and its many bars and restaurants are definitely worth a visit if you want to eat fresh, well-cooked fish at fair prices. Passing the area of lively bars, you arrive at a wooden pier that offers a walk among the beautiful colonial houses overlooking the harbour and is a very pleasant sight, especially at night, with the promenade lit up.
The jetty then connects to another elevated promenade on the coast, away from the noise of the city to enjoy the sea view in peace and quiet.
A typical market, the so-called ‘mercadillo‘, animates the harbour every Friday morning. And it is always from the harbour that one has the best view of the fireworks that are fired during the religious festival of Nuestra Senora del Carmen, between the end of July and the first week of August.
Boat cruises to see dolphins are a popular activity for tourists visiting the island. These tours offer the opportunity to explore the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean and observe dolphins and other marine life up close in their natural habitat. The most common species sighted in these waters include the bottlenose and common dolphin, but occasionally whales and other cetaceans may also be seen.
Cruises generally depart from the marina in Puerto del Carmen.
The elevated walk from the old port of Puerto del Carmen runs for several kilometres until it reaches Puerto Calero. It lasts about an hour and runs smoothly over unpaved terrain with no obstacles or dangerous sections, suitable for everyone.
Attention: during the day the walk is completely under the sun, so it is best to bring a hat and apply sun cream.
The path runs along the entire coastline between the two towns, passing through many scenic spots and alongside streets full of shops and bars. Once in Puerto Calero, you can also return by bus, which departs near the Hotel Costa Calero.
Halfway between a ranch and a water park, Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park allows you to observe animals at very close range. Daily admission costs EUR 30 and includes access to the pool area, perfect for relaxing after a visit to the park. For 50 euro you can try the unique experience of swimming with sea lions.
Puerto del Carmen overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and if boat tours will make you fall in love with this beautiful sea, diving will make you discover its depths and its many marine inhabitants.
There are plenty of activities and water tours for people of all ages and experience, so even novices need not worry that the ‘bautizo de buceo‘, or beginners’ baptism, awaits them.
The recommended dive for even the youngest divers is one that lasts 30 minutes and has a maximum depth of 6 metres, enough to see myriads of colourful fish Diving is one of the most popular activities on the island, thanks in part to the optimal water temperature and visibility, which in summer ranges from 25 to 30 metres.
Less than a 10-minute drive from Puerto del Carmen, there is a very special place that allows a journey into the old rural reality of the island of Lanzarote: La Asomada.
The inhabitants of this place used to look out over the top of the Gaida Mountain to see if the masts of enemy ships could be seen offshore. Hence the name La Asomada, meaning the waterfall, a cascade of small houses in a valley of volcanic origin.
In addition to showing the ancient infrastructure for collecting water, the roads of La Asomada lead into the beautiful Timanfaya National Park via the precious paths between what were once lava lapilli.
The route also goes to La Geria, the heart of Lanzarote’s viticulture. The villas and rural flats in this area are beautiful examples of restoration, in many cases retaining the original construction and materials. They offer jacuzzis, old courtyards for sunbathing and all the comforts in the midst of nature for a relaxing holiday.
If you love sun and sea, then the 6-kilometre stretch of golden beaches washed by the waters of the Atlantic should be enough to tempt you to visit Puerto del Carmen.
All the beaches fly the blue flag for cleanliness and absence of pollution. The surrounding waters are considered some of the calmest in the Canaries and are excellent for swimming and water sports.
Playa Chica is an attractive beach, sheltered from the wind and with dark sand with volcanic reflections. The water is clear and there are plenty of fish hiding among the rocks and numerous reefs.
It is a diver’s paradise and one of the most suitable beaches for diving. Playa Chica is likely to be very crowded in the middle of the day, but in the early morning and around sunset time it is also ideal for those who like tranquillity and small beaches.
Playa Grande is an urban beach and the busiest in Puerto del Carmen. Well-equipped and easy to access even for people with mobility problems, the beach offers a wide range of services and is located close to the central section of Avenida de Las Playas, the town’s promenade.
The beach is almost two kilometres long and its golden sand is ideal for those who enjoy walking by the sea, sheltered from the wind and with a privileged view of the Los Ajaches massif, a natural heritage site on the island of Lanzarote.
A beach with dark sand and clear water, Playa de Los Pocillos stretches far and wide and is so large that, even when it is most crowded, there is plenty of space and it is suitable for children to play safely. There are also dedicated areas with games for them.
One area of the beach is equipped with deckchairs and umbrellas that can be rented for only 4 euros a day, and with tents to shelter from the strong wind that frequently rises in such an open beach.
All in all, Playa de Los Pocillos is ideal for those who love sunbathing and those who want to take long walks completely undisturbed.
Puerto del Carmen is very easy to get to as it is centrally located on the south coast of Lanzarote. It is also convenient with respect to infrastructure as the LZ-2 road, which connects Arrecife to Playa Blanca, passes close by. It is also very easy to get there from the airport, which is only 10 kilometres away: it can be reached via the LZ-40 road travelling in a south-westerly direction.
As far as Lanzarote’s main towns are concerned, Arrecife is 15-20 minutes away, Playa Blanca about half an hour and Orzola, Lanzarote’s northernmost town, about 45 minutes. These are all journey times with a rented car: using public transport buses the time doubles and sometimes even triples.
