The marvellous island of La Graciosa is located north of Lanzarote, from which it is separated by a strip of sea called El Río, and together with the tiny islands of Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste and Alegranza it forms the Chinijo archipelago.

This small, flat island of just 27 square kilometres and of volcanic origin, like the entire Canarian archipelago, has two characteristic villages, La Caleta de Sebo and Casas de Pedro Barba, and is easily reached by small boats from the port of Orzola on Lanzarote with a crossing of just 20 minutes.

The rugged, rocky coastline contains beautiful, unspoilt shorelines. Among the beaches of La Graciosa, which is completely within the Chinijo Natural Park, the Playa de las Conchas, Montana Amarilla, a rocky beach of a thousand colours, the beach of El Salado and the beach of La Cocina are not to be missed. Other wonderful beaches on La Graciosa Island are Playa la Francesa, Lambra and Pedro Barba.

The island is characterised by barren land, striking reliefs including the volcanic cone of Las Agujas, which at 266 metres above sea level is the highest point on Graciosa. There is a beautiful view from the cliff of Punta Fariones from where you can admire the island of Lanzarote.

La Graciosa’s urban road network is not paved but the island boasts good tourist services including hotels, guesthouses, campsites, restaurants and local craft shops.

The island of La Graciosa is an ideal destination for those seeking a relaxing holiday or a day trip during their stay on Lanzarote.

How to get to the island of La Graciosa

To get to the island of La Graciosa the only option is by ferry from Orzola, operated by the local company Lineas Romero. In summer there are departures from 08:30 in the morning until 20:00 while in winter the last ferry leaves at 18:00. Departures take place at varying intervals of one to three hours, depending on the time of day, but consider around eight to ten ferries per day. The journey is about 7 kilometres long and takes approximately 30 minutes; the arrival in La Graciosa is at the small port of Caleta de Sebo.

To get to Orzola, simply take the LZ-1 northwards, as we are talking about the northernmost resort on Lanzarote. The distance separating it from Arrecife is about 35 kilometres, which becomes about 40 from the airport and about 50 from Puerto del Carmen. Once in Orzola, you will certainly have no difficulty locating the port and the pier from which the ferry to La Graciosa departs.

Playa la Francesa

The true natural pearl of little Graciosa is the beautiful Playa la Francesa, a pristine stretch of sand along the southern coast of the island and overlooking the Famara cliffs of neighbouring Lanzarote.

The beautiful beach of fine white sand is lapped by a shallow turquoise crystal-clear sea and is an ideal place for sunbathing and snorkelling.

At 430 metres long, this isolated beach is divided in two by a few stones. The beach is not equipped so don’t forget to bring something to drink and eat.

When the tide rises, Playa la Francesa turns into a fascinating lagoon.

Playa la Francesa can be reached by a 50-minute walk, 20 by bicycle, from the village of Caleta del Sebo. Not far away is the equally beautiful beach of Playa de La Cocina.

Where to stay on the island of La Graciosa

The village of Caleta de Sebo from above

Against all odds given its size and terrain, there is no shortage of accommodation in La Graciosa . They are all flats and number just over 40; they are almost all located in Caleta del Sebo, the small village where the ferries from Orzola dock. Some are rather frugal, in keeping with the mood of the locality, while others are real gems, furnished in a modern style and equipped with every comfort. Whatever you choose, you will never be too far from either the sea or the port, which you will have to reach on foot anyway. Remember that Caleta del Sebo was built on the beach and the streets are made of sand.

If you really want to get away from the world and isolate yourself for a few days, head for Playa de Pedro Barba, near the eastern tip of the island. Here you will find three beautiful Canarian-style villas with a splendid view close to the beach. You will find yourself in a quiet and exclusive place, but without any services nearby.
