Costa Teguise is a tourist resort on Lanzarote located on the east coast of the island, a few kilometres north of the capital Arrecife. We are talking about a resort that came out of nowhere in the 1970s-1980s, when large hotels and resorts began to spring up and still dominate its urban landscape.
You won’t find much to see here, but the area is very good, both for its excellent hotel accommodation and because its location is strategic, not far from the airport and some of Lanzarote’s most beautiful attractions, such as the Jameos de Agua, a 20-minute drive away, or the Mirador del Rio , 25 minutes away. In addition, the capital Arrecife is a 10-minute drive away and the international airport is 15 minutes away.
For this and a thousand other reasons, Costa Teguise is certainly not a destination to be discarded. Although it is less emblazoned than the elegant Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca, you will still find several interesting things to do, including a golf course, a large water park and a beautiful aquarium, perfect day getaways from the sea. Speaking of the sea, the beaches of Costa Teguise are many and varied – you are sure to find your favourite.
Costa Teguise has several beaches to choose from. They are not the most famous in Lanzarote nor the most beautiful, but you will be able to enjoy crystal-clear sea and a good dose of relaxation, especially if you have a hotel around here and do not feel like renting a car. Sandy beaches, equipped beaches, free beaches… there really is something for everyone.
The largest and perhaps most beautiful beach in Costa Teguise is Playa de las Cucharas. Located just north of the town centre, it stretches for about 500 metres and is divided into several parts by some artificial cliffs perpendicular to the beach.
Las Cucharas is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas, although there are also large stretches of free beach. Soft and golden, the beach is often mixed with black volcanic sand washed ashore by the tides, creating interesting and beautiful colour effects. Behind it is a beautiful garden with palm trees and a pedestrian promenade, along which there is a children’s play area and public toilets. On the beach there is also an open-air gymnasium and an amphitheatre, used for mainly evening performances.
The northernmost beach in Costa Teguise is Playa de los Charcos. It is located at the northern end of the town and is a fine sandy beach with a few stones as you get closer to the water, which enlarge and pop up especially during low tide. For this reason, it is not a beach suitable for children or the disabled, but it is worth coming here to find peace and quiet. There are also a few umbrellas available, a public shower and little else. There is a car park a stone’s throw from the beach, making it very convenient to reach by car.
Playa del Jablillo is one of the beaches in the centre of Costa Teguise. Situated in a privileged position, it is small and sandy, lapped by rocks that, among other things, create small natural pools where children can play in absolute tranquillity. The beach has a small area equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas, but much of it is free. There is a lifeguard station, a toilet, a public shower and little else. However, it is very convenient for those who have a hotel in Costa Teguise, as it can be easily reached on foot or even by car, as there is a large car park to the left of it.
Located just south of the centre, Playa Bastiàn is a beautiful sandy beach in a beautiful setting and in a quiet location. The beach is roughly divided into two parts: the part closest to the sea is wilder and more natural, while behind it there is a small wall, which separates it from a section further from the sea where it is possible to lie down in the natural shade of palm trees or to position oneself within small semicircular areas, built with dry stone walls, where one can stretch out one’s sunbed in complete privacy and at the same time sheltered from the winds.
Playa Bastiàn also has a small equipped area where sunbeds and umbrellas can be hired. There are public showers and a toilet, as well as a small playground for children about ten metres from the beach. However, there are no kiosks or restaurants of any kind, so bring your own food and water if necessary. Eating or drinking will not be a problem, however, because behind the beach there is a nice pedestrian promenade leading to the centre.
The southernmost of Costa Teguise’s beaches, the one closest to Arrecife, is Playa El Ancla. It is one of the wildest in the area, although it is bordered by a cliff that makes its waters calmer and quieter than normal. The beach can be accessed from Avenida del Salinero, which runs along the coast, from where a small flight of steps leads down to the beach, made of sand and pebbles.
Playa El Ancla is small and wild, exposed to the currents and not equipped, except for a public shower for free use. It is also rather uncomfortable to enter the water, as there are many stones, some of them quite large. It is certainly not the most beautiful beach in Costa Teguise, but if your hotel is in the immediate vicinity it could be a convenient alternative.
North of Costa Teguise, on Avenida Las Acacias near the El Trèbol shopping centre, is the Lanzarote Aquarium, also known as Aquarium Costa Teguise. It is a small but interesting aquarium, ideal for spending a few hours away from the sea with the whole family. Although there are so many things to see in Lanzarote, a visit to the aquarium is not to be missed. It is one of the largest aquariums in the Canary Islands, with more than a million litres of water spread over 33 tanks, where you can see hundreds of marine species, both those typical of the Canaries and those from other seas.
The most beautiful part of the aquarium in Lanzarote is a large underwater tunnel, built under the main tank, which alone holds 500,000 litres of water. From here you have the opportunity to admire sharks from a privileged vantage point, such as grey sharks, blacktip sharks, bamboo sharks and zebra sharks; there are also manta rays, stingrays and hundreds of fish of all kinds.
The Aquarium Costa Teguise also houses three tactile aquariums for adults and children, where you can touch first-hand fish of all species including sea urchins and sea cucumbers. Among the highlights at the aquarium, although the cost is high, is the chance to swim with sharks in the Oceanarium, the aquarium’s largest tank. It is the only Spanish aquarium where you can do this without qualification.
The Lanzarote Aquarium is open every day of the week from 10:00 in the morning to 18:00 in the afternoon. Admission tickets can be purchased at the ticket counters or directly online. Full price tickets are payable for the 12 to 64 age group, while there are reductions for children aged 4 to 11, adults aged 65 and over, and the disabled. Admission is free for children from 0 to 3 years of age.
Along the LZ-34 road, which connects Costa Teguise to Tahiche and along which there is also a golf course, you will find the Aquapark Costa Teguise, a huge water park that will allow you to have fun with your friends or family. There are attractions for the little ones, slides for adrenaline and high-speed lovers and a large central pool. There is also a relaxation area with sunbeds and umbrellas, as well as a jacuzzi and facilities such as changing rooms, showers, a cafeteria, shops and restaurants. There is also an area reserved for photos, which you can buy later.
If you do not have a rental car, you can also arrive at Aquapark Costa Teguise from Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca by using the paid shuttle bus service, which makes several stops at these two locations before arriving at the park.
Aquapark Costa Teguise is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00. You can buy your ticket at the park’s ticket counters or online, which is especially recommended on busy days to avoid queuing at the entrance. You can purchase a day ticket or only a half-day ticket, specifically from 14:00 to 17:00. Children up to 3 years old are entitled to free admission.
