La Palma Airport (SPC) is located along the southeast coast of the island, in Villa de Mazo and 8 kilometres from the capital Santa Cruz de la Palma.
The passenger terminal is modern and functional and houses 25 check-in desks and 9 gates. Air traffic is mainly domestic, operated by Binter Canarias and CanaryFly, and connects the small island of La Palma with Tenerife North, Gran Canaria and Madrid-Barajas airport.
Outside the La Palma airport terminal, there are no facilities where you can sleep. Therefore, if you need to rest as soon as you land in case of a flight arriving late in the evening, or on the contrary to sleep as much as possible on the day of departure, you have to move a few kilometres.
But this is not a big problem, because the area where the airport is located is rather urbanised. You can choose the villages of Brena Baja and Las Ledas inland, about 10 minutes’ drive from the terminal, or the coastal resort of Los Cancajos, facing the ocean and also with a beautiful black sand beach. In Los Cancajos there are numerous flats, residences, aparthotels and also a hotel of the famous Spanish chain H10.
The airport of La Palma is located on the east coast of the island, more or less in the centre, in a rather convenient and easy to reach location, especially coming from Santa Cruz de la Palma, the capital. From here, it is sufficient to head south, taking the LP-2 road, which later becomes the LP-5, following the signs to the airport. It takes less than 10 minutes from the centre of Santa Cruz, for a distance to cover of just over 6 kilometres.
Everything changes if you want to get to the airport in La Palma from other destinations on the island: from the northwest coast, in the areas of Garafia, Puntagorda or Tijarafe, it takes about an hour and the road is much more winding. The same applies if you are staying in the north or northeast, in the areas of Franceses, Los Sauces, Los Galguitos or La Galga, as you will first have to get to Santa Cruz by the LP-1 road, which is very winding in these parts, and then continue towards the airport. From the south and southeast, on the other hand, the road is much smoother: LP-2 is practically a motorway, and the distances to Puerto Naos or Los Canarios are never excessive.
Line 500 connects the airport with the island’s capital and the tourist area of Los Cancajos with departures every 30 minutes.
Taxis are parked outside the main terminal in front of the active area but we highly recommend hiring a car to be able to move around freely and visit the most interesting places that would be difficult to reach by public transport.
