La Palma is the northernmost island of the Canary Islands and belongs to the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It covers over 708 square kilometres and has a population of over 85,000 inhabitants. Spread over 14 municipalities, it offers a wide variety of scenery and climate. Beautiful, barren, wild, surprising, marvellous…these are just some of the adjectives with which it will come natural to describe this island.

When to go to La Palma

From the coast up to 2,000 metres above sea level, temperatures in La Palma do not vary significantly throughout the year: they average around 20° C, which means fantastic weather in both winter and summer.

Although it is promoted as a summer tourist destination due to its natural beauty, it should be remembered that the sun shines on La Palma almost all year round. That is why it is not a bad idea, to escape the cold, to visit the island in winter, when the vegetation is at its strongest.

Things to do in La Palma

The view from the Mirador Roque de Los Muchachos

If there is one element that dominates the island, it is undoubtedly the landscape. A landscape shaped by volcanoes that offers natural sites of worldwide interest. Added to nature are the historical sites that the island’s colonial past has brought to the present day. On your tour of La Palma you can therefore combine culture with nature in a perfect mix.

There are many things to see in La Palma, among them the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, within which is the Roque de los Muchachos, the highest point on the island at almost 2500 metres. Back at sea level, don’t miss a tour of the narrow streets of the capital Santa Cruz de la Palma, a colonial town with a 16th century atmosphere.

Beaches of la Palma

The beach of Los Cancajos

The first thing you will think of as soon as you arrive in La Palma is to head for the beach. The island offers spectacular beaches of white sand and turquoise waters, beautiful unspoilt bays where you can sunbathe surrounded by natural landscapes, family-friendly beaches with all kinds of facilities. All that remains is to choose the one that best suits your plans and let yourself relax.

Some of the most beautiful beaches in La Palma include Nogales beach with black volcanic sand and spectacular cliffs, as well as Los Cancajos beach, Charco Verde and Piscinas de la Fajana.

What to do in La Palma

La Palma is nature: if you love outdoor activities, this is the place for you. Hiking, walking, swimming, diving; the island lends itself to all of these. Whether you observe it from the top of its mountains or from the bottom of its waters, La Palma will impress you with its beauty.

Choose La Palma if you are interested in all that: other leisure activities play a minor role. It is difficult to find a touristy nightlife with bars and discos, and unlike the larger Canary Islands, there are no golf courses.

Hiking

La Palma is a paradise for hikers. For many holidaymakers, the numerous possibilities for hiking trails are one of the main reasons for visiting La Palma.

The network of trails stretches for more than 1,000 kilometres, and the paths are of all kinds: from short walks to intense treks lasting more than a day. Many of the hiking trails are the so-called Caminos Reales, which were the paths of the Guanches centuries ago.

The hiking trails in La Palma are signposted in accordance with EU regulations, while those who prefer to rely on guided hikes can contact one of the local tour guides who offer numerous well-prepared hiking trails.

Diving

Beneath the shores of La Palma, divers will discover a surprisingly beautiful world. The waters are clean, and visibility extends up to 50 metres. Rocky cliffs, lava formations with ridges and caves and a variety of marine fauna offer a unique opportunity to enjoy nature.

Numerous species of fish can be found in these waters, and thanks to temperatures that do not drop below 18° in winter, diving is possible all year round. There are numerous schools that organise dives with qualified divers, able to make even the most inexperienced tourists fall in love with these maria.

Deep-sea fishing

The fishing area around La Palma rivals the most popular ones in the world, so much so that today the island is a popular tourist destination for sports fishing enthusiasts.

In addition to the classic deep-water fishing for tuna, marlin and sharks, the underwater world of escarpments, ravines and sandbars offers many opportunities for fishing for many other species. The best time for fishing is summer, when the waters are generally calmer. One of the most popular areas is around Puerto de Tazacorte.

Where to stay in La Palma

In an island that is a constant up and down, you might consider finding accommodation surrounded by greenery. In fact, in addition to the hotels on the coast at the more touristy resorts, there is a lot of accommodation inland, the main aim of which is to create a synergy with the surrounding environment.

You will therefore find many ‘casas rural‘, ready to accommodate you during your stay, but if you are looking for more comfort, you can choose to stay at one of the many boutique hotels that offer a higher level of service.

How to get to La Palma

La Palma is a niche tourist destination, although it is growing steadily: it hosts an average of 140,000 tourists a year, most of whom arrive by plane.

There are not many direct flights to La Palma, but it is possible to take a flight with a stopover. For example, you can choose to fly with a low-cost airline to Madrid and from there with Iberia to La Palma. Another option is to fly with Easyjet to Berlin or London Gatwick or with Vueling to Barcelona, and from there take a flight with the same companies.

Arriving in La Palma via Tenerife

The route via Tenerife is a little inconvenient: flights from Europe arrive at Tenerife South airport, while those to La Palma leave from Tenerife North. However, if you want to combine La Palma with Tenerife it is a good solution to take a direct flight to Tenerife and then a ferry or catamaran to La Palma (takes less than two hours).
