The most remote resort on Gran Canaria is Puerto de Mogán. It is a pleasant village located on the south-west coast of the island, where the GC-1 road ends, which runs clockwise from the capital Las Palmas and connects practically all the coastal resorts, one after the other. After Puerto de Mogán, however, Gran Canaria changes completely, becoming rugged and wild, mountainous and uncomfortable to visit, so much so that practically no one goes beyond this last outpost.
But despite the premise, don’t think that Puerto de Mogán is quiet, or that it’s not worth getting there. Quite the contrary! This charming town, a hamlet of the municipality of Mogán located a few kilometres further north, is a must-see during a holiday in Gran Canaria, both for the view it affords and the beauty of its beach.
Basically, Puerto de Mogan can be divided into three parts, each equally interesting in its own way. The most famous, the one you find on all postcards and printed on souvenirs, is the Little Venice, known as Pequena Venecia or also as the Venecia de Canarias in Spanish. It is the area of the marina, where the houses are small and white, with colourful outlines in green, yellow, blue and purple. It is the most picturesque area, where walking is made even more pleasant by the presence of numerous shops, bars and restaurants.
The second area of Puerto de Mogán is the old town, perched on a hill just behind Little Venice, with narrow streets and typically Canarian houses. Getting your bearings here is not easy and moving uphill can be uncomfortable. The effort, however, will be rewarded by the beautiful views and sunsets that can be admired from the highest parts of the district and from the mirador at the top.
Finally, the third area of Puerto de Mogan is the zona hotelera, full of modern hotels, residences with swimming pools and all-inclusive hotels, where you will also find many services such as the bus station, shopping centre and supermarket. This area totally lacks authenticity, but winks at the tourist who seeks all amenities. However, it remains the area of Puerto de Mogan furthest from the beach.
There is only one beach in Puerto de Mogán, as nearby beaches such as Taurito or Tiritana are part of the municipality of Mogan, of which Puerto is a hamlet. However, the beach in Puerto de Mogan will make you happy, because it is really beautiful. It has a semicircular shape, facing south and bordered by breakwater cliffs that make the water calm and pleasant even in less than ideal weather conditions. Moreover, the view of Little Venice and the old town is really beautiful.
About 200-300 metres long, the beach of Puerto de Mogán is of golden sand. On the western side, it is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, while the rest is free. There is no natural shade, but behind it there is a small, very pleasant pedestrian promenade, the Avenida Varadero, where souvenir and beach goods shops, bars and restaurants line one after the other. Both bathing establishment users and bathers who choose the public beach can take advantage of certain services such as lifeguards with lifeguard service and showers on the beach. There is also the possibility of renting pedal boats or canoes, and a kiosk where you can book jet ski rides, parasailing, stand up paddle and much more.
Next to Puerto de Mogán beach there is also a small cove, Caleta de Mogán, where the water is transparent and perfect for snorkelling. However, it is not suitable for children or the elderly as getting into the water is difficult due to the stony seabed.
As we stated at the beginning of the article, Puerto de Mogan is divided into three distinct areas, which although not too far apart are totally different: Little Venice, the old town and the new area. Therefore, choosing one over the other can completely change the overall feeling of the holiday.
In Little Venice there are only flats and the area is closed to traffic: weigh up the pros and cons if you have a rental car. In the old town centre, the houses are charming, but climbing up with luggage or buggies in tow can be decidedly uncomfortable. On the other hand, you can admire beautiful sunsets and experience an atmosphere that is difficult to find in other parts of Gran Canaria. Finally, in the hotel zone you will find huge hotels, residences, aparthotels, all-inclusive villages and more. However, what you won’t find when staying here is atmosphere and authenticity.
We offer a selection of hotels at Puerto de Mogán to suit all categories of travellers. The most booked by tourists are the sea-facing hotels, often right on the beach. If you want to play it safe, choose one of the following: they are among the most booked hotels in Puerto de Mogán, sorted by number of reviews.
If you prefer space, privacy and the ability to prepare your own meals to a hotel holiday, book a holiday home at Puerto de Mogán. We recommend a few below, but in this case we advise you to book early because houses and apartments for rent at Puerto de Mogán are in high demand.
Puerto de Mogán is located on the south-west coast of Gran Canaria and is very easy to reach as this is where the GC-1 road, Gran Canaria’s main road infrastructure, which starts in Las Palmas and runs clockwise along the east and south coast of the island, ends.
From Las Palmas it takes about 50 minutes for a distance to cover of about 75 kilometres, from theairport it takes about half an hour and from Maspalomas it takes about 15-20 minutes. The times refer, of course, to a rented car.
However, you can also reach Puerto de Mogan by bus. From Maspalomas/Playa del Ingles, for example, you can use line 1, which runs along the coastal road via Arguineguin, Anfi del Mar and Puerto Rico. From Las Palmas, on the other hand, the journey is longer, you will have to use line 91 departing from Estaciòn San Telmo, with its terminus in Puerto de Mogan about an hour and 20 minutes later. Line 91 also stops at Gran Canaria Airport.
Puerto de Mogán is located on the south-west coast of Gran Canaria, within the municipality of Mogan and a short distance from the tourist areas of Puerto Rico and Maspalomas.
