Gran Canaria is full of enchanting villages and resorts, but where is the best place to sleep? The answer is not simple. First ask yourself whether you are looking for a quiet place or a place with a lively nightlife. Are you planning to rent a car or another means of getting around and exploring the island? Or are you planning a purely beach holiday?
There are various locations in Gran Canaria, but the best one depends on your needs. Whether you are looking for some independence or you are looking for as much comfort as possible, you will be able to find the perfect place to stay in Gran Canaria for a carefree holiday.
However, consider that most resorts are concentrated along the south coast, where the most beautiful beaches are located. Staying in the north of the island, on the other hand, will give you the opportunity to get in touch with a less touristy and well-known part of the island, suitable for a nature holiday.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is home to numerous hotels and flats and its port is one of the most important in the Canaries and beyond. If you decide to stay here, you will certainly not be bored: there are plenty of activities to do in a mix of city life and beach relaxation.
Fashionistas will find themselves in the ideal place, as there are many shops and boutiques. And for those who love good food, there is no shortage of traditional restaurants where you can sample the local gastronomy. There are beautiful hotels that will cater to your every need. In addition to nice and charming design, the establishments provide a solid base for planning excursions and tours to Gran Canaria’s points of interest without having to waste time organising them yourself.
Maspalomas consists of the resorts of Águila, Las Burras, San Agustín and Playa del Inglés. Here you will find a 2,000-hectare strip of land with 17 km of beautiful coastline with sand dunes, wide beaches, shallow waters and an excellent year-round climate, a paradise for beach lovers and holidays with children.
Accommodation here ranges from budget hotels to luxury residences and family-run B&Bs. Besides the beautiful natural park surrounding it, Maspalomas also offers attractions for all ages, such as the Aqualand water park, the Holiday World amusement park or the fascinating Mundo Aborigen.
Puerto Rico is one of Gran Canaria’s most famous resorts and is located at the mouth of a valley on the southern coast of the island. Once a small fishing port, today it is a beautiful and pleasant holiday area with restaurants, an attractive promenade, ever-bright sunshine and an amazing natural landscape.
If you want to have a lively evening, don’t miss the promenade full of bars, clubs and restaurants. The cosy and beautiful beach is located just opposite the main boardwalk and is a haven for sun worshippers thanks to its soft golden sands and pristine calm waters.
Puerto Rico is also a great place to indulge in water sports, whether you are an expert or a beginner! If you are travelling with children, don’t miss the Atlantida theme park.
Puerto de Mogan is an interesting resort on the south coast of Gran Canaria. About 20 minutes’ drive away from the hustle and bustle of Malpalomas, choosing it as a base for sleeping you will discover a completely different, quieter and more exclusive reality. The town has a beautiful sandy beach, bordered by reefs that make the water always calm and warmer in normal weather.
You can choose whether to sleep in the old town centre, perched on a hill where the tallest houses are reached by stairs somewhat reminiscent of the villages on the Greek islands, the atmosphere is cosy and the accommodation is very often charming flats, or in the area of the marina, called Little Venice, made up of small white houses with red, yellow, green or blue coloured cornices and windows. Here, too, there are almost exclusively flats for rent.
If you are looking for hotels, you will have to move a few hundred metres further inland, where more recent constructions begin, where there are some large hotels, including some with swimming pools, or all-inclusive resorts.
The northern part of Gran Canaria is undoubtedly the most traditional and unspoilt part of the island. While much of the coast to the south was colonised by the British, Scandinavians or Germans, a spirit of Spanish tradition still prevails here.
You can choose to sleep here if you want a little more relaxation and privacy, and it is the ideal place to engage in hiking and trekking. The villages of Arucas and Firgas are among the most characteristic on the island and provide good, cheap accommodation. You may also well consider taking a rented car and then moving on to the beaches in the south.
Finally, you will not be far from the island’s capital Las Palmas, a proximity that will also give you the opportunity to experience the more urban spirit of Gran Canaria.
