The small airport of La Gomera (GMZ) is located along the southern coast of the island, only 2 kilometres from Playa de Santiago and 39 kilometres from the capital San Sebastian.
Inaugurated in 1999, the airport is the most modern of the Canary Islands’ airports but has a relatively short runway that only allows traffic to and from the islands of the archipelago. It is not possible to reach La Gomera by direct flights from Europe but the island can be easily reached by a stopover at Gran Canaria Airport or Tenerife North Airport.
OutsideLa Gomera airport, as one can easily imagine, there are no facilities where one can sleep. However, the airport is very close to the resort of Playa de Santiago, one of the island’s major tourist centres and very rich in accommodation options, almost exclusively flats and holiday homes. There is only one hotel, located to the east of the town. Therefore, if your flight lands at the small airport of La Gomera late in the evening, or if, on the contrary, you are leaving early in the morning, choose Playa de Santiago without hesitation as a base where to stay in La Gomera and reach the terminal in a few minutes by taxi or hire car.
La Gomera Airport is located in the south of the island, on the rocky coast overlooking the sea, near the small urbanisation of Playa de Santiago. Although, as the crow flies, it is only 11 kilometres from San Sebastián de La Gomera, the main town, it takes about 45 minutes to get there, as the roads on the island enter the interior and are very winding. It is necessary to leave San Sebastián in a westerly direction, following the GM-2 road to the junction with the GM-3, signposted for the airport, which will take you directly to your destination.
From the north of La Gomera, it takes about an hour to get to the airport, whatever your origin. It is necessary to follow the main roads on the island, i.e. the GM-1, GM-2 or GM-3 in a southerly direction, for a distance to cover of about 35-40 kilometres depending on your point of departure.
Line 7 connects the airport with the capital San Sebastian via Valle Gran Rey while line 6 goes to the villages of Chipude, El Cercado, Las Hayas and Alajero.
Taxis stop outside the terminal. It usually takes 45 minutes to reach the island’s capital.
