Along the 90 kilometres of coastline on the island of La Gomera are numerous bays and beautiful, unspoilt beaches of black sand or pebbles.

La Gomera’s beaches along the northern coast are more windswept and subject to currents and therefore unsuitable for swimming, while the beaches along the southern coast are ideal for sunbathing and swimming.

Don’t miss the beautiful beaches of Playa Santiago, Playa Santa Catalina, Playa de la Caleta, Playa del Medio and Playa de Alojera, each of which will leave you breathless.

Near San Sebastian, the island’s capital, there are numerous virgin beaches that are difficult to access, such as Cabrito, La Guancha and La Roja.

Also very beautiful are the beaches of Tapahuga and Chinguarime in the south of the island, La Cueva and Abalos in the southwest and El Aguila and Zamora in the east.

Playa de Santiago

Playa Santiago and the village

The beach of Playa de Santiago is located along the arid southern coast of La Gomera. The sand and pebble beach is the longest on the island.

A small fishing village has developed around the beach in recent years and although it now houses first-class hotels, it has managed to retain its charm and tranquillity.

Just a 15-minute drive away is the picturesque Gran Rey Valley with its unique natural scenery and black sand beaches.

La Gomera Airport is just 2 kilometres away from Playa Santiago while San Sebastian, the island’s capital, is 37 kilometres away.

Playa de Alojera

Playa Alojera is located along the north-western coast of La Gomera and is one of the largest and most popular beaches on the island.

The beach of black volcanic sand, 200 metres long and 40 metres wide, is surrounded by impressive cliffs that drop down to the sea. The white houses, the old fishermen’s stalls now converted into residential structures, stand out picturesquely in this dark volcanic environment.

To reach Playa Alojera take the road from Vallehermoso to Valle Gran Rey to the junction with the villages of Epina and from there continue for a kilometre along a winding road to Alojera, which overlooks the beach.

The bay is located away from the large tourist centres and is quiet and idyllic.

Beaches of San Sebastian

Just a few metres from the city centre, the capital has two beautiful beaches, Playa de San Sebastian3 and Playa de la Cueva4, which are ideal for those who come to La Gomera and don’t want to go too far for a swim.

Playa de la Caleta

Considered by many to be the most beautiful beach in La Gomera, Playa de la Caleta is located along the northwest coast of the island, 6 kilometres from Hermigua.

The pebble and black sand beach, ideal for families with children, lies within a bay sheltered from currents and is ideal for snorkelling. Picnic areas are a pleasant way to spend lunch on the beach, while a small bar-restaurant offering fresh fish is open during the summer months.

At 180 metres long, the well-equipped Playa Caleta offers beautiful views of Tenerife’s Mount Teide.

Playa de Vallehermoso

Playa de Vallehermoso is located 3½ kilometres from the village of the same name, along the northern coast of the island of La Gomera.

At 200 metres long and 20 metres wide, the beach of pebbles and dark sand is surrounded by high brown cliffs and bathed by a sea that is generally very rough and therefore only suitable for experienced swimmers. Before reaching the beach, however, you can take a dip in the large seawater pool of the Parque Marítimo on your right.

Not far away is the small and secluded beach of Dejes.

The village of Vallehermoso is close to several beautiful beaches, including Argaga, Iguala, Rajita, Arguamul and La Sepultura.

Playa del Medio

The virgin beach of El Medio is located along the southern coast of La Gomera near Playa Santiago, within an inlet that also includes the pristine bays of Tapahuga and Chinguarime.

Surrounded by barren cliffs, the beach of black sand and volcanic pebbles is very quiet and frequented by naturists.

Playa del Medio does not have any services and it is necessary to bring food, drinks as well as an umbrella.

The beach can be reached by car along a dirt road from the village of Tecina and via several paths that branch off from neighbouring beaches.

Playa de Santa Catalina

Playa Santa Catalina is located along the northern coast of La Gomera, halfway between Agulo and Hermigua, and is very popular with surfers, especially between October and May when the waves are at their biggest.

Playa Santa Catalina is one of the most beautiful black sand and volcanic pebble beaches on the island. A good 850 metres long and 35 metres wide, the beach is served by small chiringuitos and rural family hotels

The beach is easy to reach thanks to the TF 711 state road that winds through green terraces and banana plantations.
