Puerto del Rosario, the capital of Fuerteventura, is located along the east coast of the island protected by a beautiful natural bay.
Lapped by the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic, Puerto del Rosario is a picturesque town with a modern infrastructure for tourism. Founded in the 18th century as Puerto de Cabras, the city soon became a flourishing merchant port, the traditional style buildings of which are still preserved in the Old Port area.
Strolling through the historic centre, you will discover the beautiful Church of Nuestra Senora del Rosario, the Casa Museo Miguel de Umamuno, the Juan Ismael art centre, the characteristic whitewashed houses and the seafront promenade where you will find the Parque Escultorico, an authentic open-air museum where you can admire more than 100 sculptures created by Canarian sculptor Juan Bordes.
Not far from Puerto del Rosario are heavenly beaches of fine white sand. Don’t miss the nearby Playa Blanca, a little further away Puerto Escondido and El Pertito, the tourist resort of Corralejo, a town with a long dune beach, the beach of Caleta de Fuste and the beaches of Sotavento and Morro Jable on the Jandia peninsula to the south.
Just outside the city, on the road to Antigua, it is possible to visit the Ecomuseo de La Alcogida where one can discover aspects of rural life on the island by visiting 7 typical Fuerteventura houses.
Fuerteventura Airport is only 5 kilometres from the capital.
Puerto del Rosario is a very special town because it has very few tourists, although it is very convenient to choose as a base to sleep in because the prices are very low and its location in the centre of the island allows you to explore the whole of Fuerteventura without enormous effort. Choose to sleep near the port if you plan to take an early morning ferry to Arrecife or Santa Cruz de Tenerife, or if you arrive by boat late in the evening. Otherwise head to the centre, although finding parking here will be very problematic. It is, however, a winning area in terms of nightlife and services available.
If you have a rented car, convenient accommodations are those close to the FV-3 ring road, with low prices, parking almost always easy to find and easy access to the ring road that then allows you to go both north and south. Finally, you can look for accommodation near the new city beach Playa del Pozos to also enjoy the sea without having to leave Puerto del Rosario.

Puerto del Rosario, the capital of Fuerteventura, is predictably central to the island. Lying on the east coast, a short distance from the airport, it is the locality best served by the road infrastructure, as this is where the two main roads start or end, the FV-1 leading to Corralejo, heading north, and the FV-2, passing through Costa Calma and leading to Morro Jable, heading south. At the same time, getting there from the airport is a matter of no more than 5 minutes, always travelling north along the FV-2.
In terms of distances, from Corralejo it takes about 25 minutes, while from the south, from Costa Calma it takes about an hour, and from Caleta de Fuste it takes 10-15 minutes.
