The most remote resort in Fuerteventura, the one furthest south, almost two hours from Corralejo and over an hour from the airport, is Morro Jable. In its own way, it is a very interesting town, as it cleverly mixes a typical Canarian area, with low, colourful houses and slow-paced life, and a totally touristy area, dominated by big hotels, aparthotels and all-inclusive resorts.
Frequented mostly by Germans and British, Morro Jable is a well-equipped resort with all facilities, including a small marina that, besides taking tourists on excursions, connects the resort with Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, thanks to some routes operated by the Fred Olsen shipping company.
But the main reason why tourists leave the north-west of Fuerteventura and come all the way down here is the beautiful Playa de Morro Jable, a south-west-facing tongue of sand, huge in both length and width: the very essence of Fuerteventura. The water takes on beautiful hues, the sand is fine and golden, and most importantly, it is popular in both summer and winter, thanks to the delightful Canarian temperatures.
In Morro Jable one ultimately only goes there to relax, to walk from the hotel to the beach in the morning and back in the evening. Often even without renting a car: the tour buses organised by tour operators, which pick up holidaymakers directly at the airport, take care of everything. There is nothing to see but the majesty of Fuerteventura’s desert nature, and the nightlife is quiet, taking place mostly within the individual hotels.
When one speaks of beaches in Morro Jable, in 99% of cases one means the town beach, the famous Playa de Morro Jable, which is very long and very wide. However, beyond the marina there is also a second beach, decidedly less frequented and with a more sombre atmosphere: this is Playa Las Coloradas.
Playa de Morro Jable represents the final stretch of the huge beach that encircles the entire south coast of Fuerteventura, which starts in Costa Calma and stretches for some 20 kilometres in all, taking on different names depending on the area. In Morro Jable, the beach is simply called Playa de Morro Jable and faces south-east. The coast changes orientation and turns south-west at Punta del Matorral, where the Morro Jable lighthouse is also located.
Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that Playa de Morro Jable stretches for 2 kilometres, from the town centre to the lighthouse, after which it takes the name Playa Matorral, although the boundaries are very blurred and never precisely established.
All along Playa de Morro Jable there are a few small bathing establishments, where sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented. However, it is important to note that the beach is really huge and very wide, so you will certainly find some areas where you can isolate yourself in absolute peace and privacy. On the beach you will also find some first aid stations, public toilets and even a gym area where you can work out. Along its entire length, the Playa de Morro Jable has a pleasant pedestrian promenade behind it where you can walk in peace, listening to the sound of the waves crashing on the sand.
The ‘other’ beach of Morro Jable is Playa Las Coloradas. It is located just east of the marina and to get there, simply walk along the road that runs alongside it, keeping the sea on your left and the mountain on your right. You will arrive at a dirt car park, where the road ends and the beach begins.
Las Coloradas takes its name from the rock formations behind it, barren and desolate mountains, which, however, take on red hues reminiscent of the colours of Arizona’s Grand Canyon. The beach has a completely different mood to Playa de Morro Jable: here you will find no services of any kind, so that with your back to the harbour you will only have nature in front of you, no construction and no human intervention.
If you want to spend a day at Playa Las Coloradas, remember to equip yourself with plenty of water, enough food and tons of sunscreen. For the beach is completely exposed to the sun, and there is no way to find shade at any time of day.
It goes without saying that the number of tourists you will find at Playa Las Coloradas will be considerably less than at Morro Jable. Highly recommended therefore for those who want to isolate themselves from everything and everyone!
In Morro Jable, the hotel offer is twofold: in the town centre and its surroundings, i.e. between the beginning of the beach and the marina, there are mostly small flats for rent, while in the ‘new’ area, i.e. to the east of the centre close to the beach, there are plenty of hotels and residences, many of them huge and equipped with all comforts, such as a swimming pool, an entertainment service and several restaurants. These latter facilities, normally rather expensive, are designed for an all-inclusive clientele, often families with children, who come to Fuerteventura in search of complete relaxation.
The choice of accommodation to sleep in Morro Jable ultimately depends on your budget and your idea of a holiday. Finally, if you plan to rent a car, make sure that the hotel you have chosen has a car park, or at least that there is parking available in the area without difficulty.
We offer a selection of hotels at Morro Jable to suit all categories of travellers. The most booked by tourists are the sea-facing hotels, often right on the beach. Morro Jable is located in the extreme south of Fuerteventura, and is the end of the FV-2 road, which runs from the capital Puerto del Rosario along the entire east coast of the island. Consequently, if you want to get to Morro Jable from Puerto del Rosario and the airport, simply take the FV-2 south, and in a little over an hour you will arrive at your destination.
On the other hand, if you are staying in Corralejo and want to make a day trip to Morro Jable, in this case you will first have to take the FV-1 road heading south to Puerto del Rosario, and then enter the FV-2 to your destination. In this case, the travel time is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
There is no public transport on this route and taxis are obviously very expensive, given that we are talking about journeys of 100 kilometres and more. Therefore, if you decide to stay around here and do not want to rent a car, check carefully that your hotel provides a shuttle service to and from the airport.
