Costa Calma is a quiet area in the south of Fuerteventura and is generally chosen by middle-aged tourists, families and couples looking for simplicity and peace. The place was practically built from nothing around 1970 and has quickly become a popular tourist destination. The area is mainly frequented by Germans.
Generally, the accommodations here are large 4-star hotels and the flats are of medium category, all with a good range of amenities. Many tourists who stay here are part of an ‘all inclusive’ clientele that is not interested in exploring Fuerteventura, but in staying in the resort all day, taking advantage of the swimming pool and the many facilities provided by the hotel.
This is why there is no real town centre in Costa Calma, except for a short stretch of Calle Punta de los molinillos where there are a few shops, a small supermarket, bars and restaurants. Entertainment and activities offered by the hotels in the area consist of scuba diving, windsurfing, tennis, volleyball (weekly tournaments between hotels) and, of course, the possibility of spending free time on the beach.
For those who want to explore the surroundings, buses leave every hour for Jandia and Morro Jable. A service is provided from early morning until the evening. There are also 8 buses per day to Puerto del Rosario, the capital of Fuerteventura.
As for the Fuerteventura traditions that can be enjoyed in the Costa Calma area, the traditional Canarian wrestling, la lucha canaria, can be admired in the nearby village of La Lajita.
The beach of Costa Calma is a long stretch of soft, clear sand, covered by a fairly narrow strip of dunes and lined with deckchairs and parasols. Its calm, crystal-clear waters are safe for children, and it is possible to enjoy water sports such as diving and windsurfing.
A short distance south of Costa Calma is Sotavento Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura. Its length of about nine kilometres leaves tourists speechless.
During low tide, the island gains so much land that some people may think that Fuerteventura is the largest of the Canary Islands. The huge lagoons that form during low tide, the constant sunshine and the golden sand make it worthy of another synonym: paradise.
But for endless walks beside its clear waters, there is no need to wait for low tide. In addition, a sandbar 100 and 300 metres away from the shore creates a three-kilometre-long lagoon, perfect for windsurfers or kitesurfers, so much so that the beach is full of people practising these sports and there are schools and rentals. In addition, windsurfing championships are held here every year in July.
When the tide is low, from Costa Calma it is possible to walk the 28-kilometre stretch of beaches that line the entire coast of Fuerteventura to the Jandia lighthouse, passing some of the island’s most beautiful beaches such as Playa de Sotavento and Risco del Paso.
At times, however, the winds could be strong, especially in the afternoon. For this reason, the area around Costa Calma is considered one of the best wind-surfing destinations.
The nightlife in Costa Calma, as one might guess from the name, is rather flat. The evening entertainment mainly takes place within the hotels, as well as some local bars, shopping centres and a couple of English pubs. Discos are located inside hotels.
Restaurants in Costa Calma offer international, German, Chinese and local cuisine. They are mainly located inside shopping centres. There are also a few cafés.
The Oasis Park is a large theme park, an attraction for children and families. It is the largest amusement park in the Canaries at 800,000 square metres and is located in La Lajita.
The park is home to hippos, giraffes and over 200 species of birds. There is also a botanical garden. The most interesting attraction of the park is the possibility of taking part in a camel safari. Spending a day at the Oasis Park is one of the best things to do in Costa Calma, for young and old alike.
When it comes to water sports to do in Costa Calma, there are various activities to choose from such as windsurfing, sailing, jet skiing, kayaking, fishing, sailing, catamaran sailing, rowing, deep-sea fishing, diving, snorkelling and more. Costa Calma is located on the isthmus of land that separates the Jandia Natural Park, in the extreme south of the island, with the rest of Fuerteventura. Therefore, its location is rather southern and getting there from the north, where most of the tourist landmarks are located, is never too quick. From Corralejo, for example, it takes almost an hour and a half, for a distance of 100 kilometres round, taking the FV-1 road to Puerto del Rosario, the island’s capital, and then taking the FV-2 to your destination.
If, on the other hand, you start from Puerto del Rosario, you have to allow for a one-hour journey, for a distance of around 70 kilometres, while from the airport it takes 50 minutes and from Caleta de Fuste 45 minutes.
