The village of Antigua, or Castillo, is located in the centre of the island of Fuerteventura, 17 kilometres south of the capital Puerto del Rosario and 10 kilometres from Fuerteventura Airport.
Old cottages, typical Canarian-style houses and still-functioning windmills, from which roasted corn is produced, characterise the relaxing and charming landscape of Antigua.
Picturesque is the church Nuestra Senora de Antigua, built in the Arab style in 1785 and with an external bell tower, and very interesting is the village centre where you can also visit some small art galleries.
Not far from the centre of Antigua are the famous beaches of Caleta de Fueste, El Muellito, also known as Las Salinas, and Pozo Negro, the most fascinating. If you don’t feel like basking in the sun, know that Costa Antigua also boasts a golf course.
Thanks to its central location, Antigua is a great starting point for exploring the island and the best way to do this is to hire a car.
The supply of places to sleep in Antigua is by no means large, so it is advisable to book well in advance if you want to grab one. Also because the facilities where you can sleep are almost exclusively private houses, which are often sold out due to their beauty, as they are often in a dominant position and have a swimming pool.
Around Antigua, a few kilometres to the south is the village of Valles de Ortega, where there are more houses and flats to choose from, while to the east is Triquivijate. Both of these locations are almost unknown to mass tourism, so you will have the opportunity to experience the daily life of a village in the interior of Fuerteventura, with all the pros and cons that this choice might entail.
Located in the geographical centre of the island, Antigua is never too convenient to reach, but at the same time never too far away. It can essentially be reached by two roads: the FV-20 from the north or south, and the FV-413 from the east, which connects it with Costa de Antigua and Nuevo Horizonte, two relatively recent urbanisations located very close to both the airport and Caleta de Fuste.
If you want to get to Antigua from Corralejo, you have two options: either take the FV-1, which passes through the east coast of the island, diverting to the FV-20 at Puerto del Rosario until you reach your destination, or go through the interior, via the FV-10, FV-207 and FV-20 roads until you reach your destination. The times and distances are roughly the same, about 45 minutes and about 50 kilometres: the choice depends essentially on the type of views you want to admire from your car window.
Antigua is located in the geographical centre of Fuerteventura, about 10 kilometres by road from the beaches of Caleta de Fuste.
