Fuerteventura is the closest Canary Island to the North African coast, being only 100 kilometres from Morocco. It is the second largest and is renowned for its long beaches of golden sand and dunes. The island is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. Designated as a Biosphere Reserve, Fuerteventura is a destination where a beautiful natural landscape and a relaxed lifestyle coexist with excellent facilities and attractions.

In the urban and rural areas of Fuerteventura, there are countless reminders of the island’s rich history, such as historic churches, windmills, museums and ancestral homes. Meanwhile, life in Fuerteventura is vibrant throughout the year. There are certainly seasonal peaks, but generally the frequency of visitors is more constant than on the other Canary Islands.

When to go to Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year. During the summer months from June to August, temperatures often reach up to 30 °C, with low humidity levels and almost no rainfall. The winter months, on the other hand, are pleasantly mild, with average temperatures of 20° C. Although it is an island where it tends to rain very little, there is a greater chance of rain between the months of December and March.

Things to do in Fuerteventura

Corralejo, view from the sea

Fuerteventura offers an extremely heterogeneous holiday. Tourists coming to the island have the possibility to alternate between days dedicated entirely to the sea and days dedicated to culture or sport. For those who enjoy an activity-packed holiday, this is the place to be.

Among the things to see in Fuerteventura are the inland villages of Betancuria and Antigua, as well as some great natural spots, starting with the famous dunes of Corralejo, passing through the Jandia natural park to the Isla de Los Lobos natural park, a small island located a few hundred metres from the Corralejo coast where you can admire the sea in crazy colours and enjoy complete tranquillity.

Finally, among the must-see sights in Fuerteventura there are also a few museums, especially interesting for those who also seek to understand the history of the places they visit. Between museums dedicated to cheese and house-museums of 18th-century naval officers, you will certainly find something to suit your taste, to take a little rest from the stressful beach life!

Beaches of Fuerteventura

The beach of Morro Jable

Those in search of sea, sand and sun will find paradise in Fuerteventura with its 100 or so beaches. Indeed, the most beautiful aspect of the island is its numerous coves and beaches of golden sand and calm waters, some of which are natural oases. The most beautiful ones are mainly concentrated in the south of the island, especially in the municipality of Pájara, but in general wonderful beaches can be found all over Fuerteventura.

South of Corralejo is an 11 km long area along the coast that has been declared a natural park, the Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo. The sand is very clear and beautiful, and from the beach you have a fantastic view of the islands of Los Lobos and Lanzarote. The beach is suitable for children, and since it is endless, one can also find a few spots where one can practice naturism. The area is also frequented by surfers and kite surfers.

The beach on the Jandía peninsula runs from Morro Jable to Costa Calma for 21 km. The entire beach is divided into several sections, and it is even possible to walk from Morro Jable to Costa Calma or vice versa in 5 or 6 hours and return by bus. The part of the beach where the lighthouse, the tourist centre of Jandía, is located is also called Playa de Matorral, and is ideal for families with children: fine light-coloured sand, clean and shallow sea. Playa de Sotavento, 5 km long, is located on the south-east coast of Fuerteventura. The beach is divided into the areas of Playa Risco del Paso and Playa Barca. World windsurfing and kitesurfing championships are held here every year.

Cofete beach is not suitable for swimming, as the waters are never calm. There is something mysterious about it: deserted and lonely, in the background you can see the mountains of Jandia, which reach an altitude of 800 metres. The weather is always cool and the waves are very high. However, the beach remains scenic and beautiful! The area is frequented by both tourists and locals, but is totally unsuitable for children.

El Cotillo is still an underdeveloped tourist area, which is what makes this beach so beautiful. The entire beach area consists of several bays, separated from each other by lava rocks and stones. Although the bay is located on the west coast, the most exposed to the winds, swimming is possible without any problem. The beach is also suitable for children as the sea is very shallow.

What to do in Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is home to some of the most beautiful scenery to be found in the Canaries. Floating in the waters of the Atlantic, its pristine volcanic nature offers several surreal sights to photograph and share, but also soul-stirring experiences that will give you a different perspective of the world we live in. Let’s take a look at the things to do on a trip to Fuerteventura.

Dolphin and whale spotting

Dolphin and whale watching excursions in Fuerteventura are one of the most exciting activities for visitors to the island. These tours offer the opportunity to observe a variety of cetaceans in their natural habitat, thanks to the rich marine life surrounding the island. You can choose from boat and sailing or catamaran tours, motor boat tours and, the most comprehensive, guided excursions with marine biologists.

The waters around Fuerteventura are home to several species of dolphins, including the common dolphin, bottlenose dolphin and Atlantic spotted dolphin. Among the whales, occasional sightings of minke whales, sperm whales and orcas are possible.

Tours and Excursions

From Fuerteventura, it takes only 25 minutes by ferry to reach the island of Lanzarote. One can also consider taking a boat tour around Fuerteventura, starting from Puerto del Rosario.

Another place to reach from Corralejo in a few minutes by ferry is Isla de Lobos, a desert paradise, while it is also possible to participate in deep-sea fishing boat trips.

There are also local tourist agencies that organise day trips to the main towns of Fuerteventura.

Tasting typical products

Much of the cuisine of the Canary Islands combines Spanish tradition with African and South American gastronomy. On the other hand, the volcanic roots of the island are also reflected in the dishes.

Fish obviously plays an important role in the island’s gastronomy, and there are many wine routes that can be explored, where one can discover the various vineyards and participate in wine-tasting tours.

Hiking and photography

Essentially, the island is one big volcano, so it is worth trekking to explore it on foot. For example, don’t miss the Montana de Tindaya in the north-east. This is the oldest mountain in the Canaries and was sacred to the indigenous inhabitants. Then explore the lava craters around Corralejo until you reach Lajares.

Don’t forget to take a camera with you at all times: from desert scenery to beaches to volcanic areas, there will always be something to capture. For photo lovers, the splendid light on the island regulates unique colours and shades.

Sports

Fuerteventura is legendary among surfers, windsurfers and kiteboarders. The dunes of Corralejo are the most popular spot, but experienced surfers looking to get away from the crowds venture down the north coast of the island to El Cotillo, where the wild beaches are buffeted by impressive winds at irregular intervals.

Where to stay in Fuerteventura

There are many small and medium-sized hotels on the island. The best way to discover it and get into the spirit of Fuerteventura is to stay in one of the many Bed and Breakfasts or rent a flat. Whatever the choice of accommodation, just know that prices are very cheap and value for money is generally very advantageous.

When choosing where to stay in Fuerteventura, the amenities and services you are looking for should be considered. There are more well-equipped centres, which cater to the needs of families, and more isolated areas, which are perfect for those looking for a less touristy stay.

If you take a rental car, you can also think about sleeping in more isolated locations and moving around during the day. The more touristy centres certainly help to organise excursions, tours and trips, thanks to the presence of local tour operators. If you feel like organising your own trip, you can also forego staying in the more touristy towns and throw yourself into adventure tourism. Let’s take a look at the most recommended places.

Morro Jable, meaning ‘fishing village’, and Jandía, ‘the new town’, are among the largest tourist centres in Fuerteventura. A large, light-coloured beach with fine sand behind which stretches protected salt marshes is the main attraction of the area.

Recommended accommodation in Puerto del Rosario

Puerto del Rosario is the capital of Fuerteventura and is a town where fishing is a key economic activity. It is not traditionally a tourist town, although cruise ships dock here for visits to Fuerteventura, as do inter-island ferries. Today, the promenade has been developed and improved, and the two city beaches have been expanded. Puerto del Rosario is perhaps the best town for shopping in Fuerteventura.
