The small airport of El Hierro (VDE), known as Aeropuerto de los Cangrejos, is located in the north-east of the island, close to the towns of Tamaduste to the north, La Caleta to the south and Villa de Valverde to the west.
Inaugurated in 1972, the air terminal opened the doors of tourism for the westernmost island of the Canary Islands archipelago. Flights are exclusively domestic and connect El Hierro with the airport of Tenerife North, and the airports of Gran Canaria and La Palma.
Outside the terminal, as you can well imagine, there are no establishments where you can sleep, but you can easily choose one of these three locations and then arrive at the airport by car, bus or taxi: consider a journey of less than ten minutes.
If you want to combine proximity to the sea with proximity to the airport, choose without hesitation one of the flats or residences in Tamaduste or La Caleta. If you prefer to experience the daily life of the locals, head for Villa de Valverde, where you will find plenty of facilities where you can sleep, as well as the main services such as mini-markets, shops, sports fields, post office and pharmacies.
Getting to the airport in El Hierro is very simple, as all you have to do is arrive at Villa de Valverde and take the HI-2 road heading south, then, at the junction with the HI-3, take the latter, heading towards El Tamaduste – La Caleta. The ‘aeropuerto’ signs are well signposted and it is practically impossible to make a mistake, given how easy it is to get around the island. In all, from the centre of Villa de Valverde to the airport of El Hierro will take no more than 10 minutes, for a total distance of just over 8 kilometres.
If, on the other hand, you are coming from the south or west of the island, arrive first at La Frontera, and from there take the HI-5 road to Villa de Valverde; from there follow the directions we gave earlier. In all, it takes about half an hour by car from the centre of La Frontera to the airport, a distance of about 25 kilometres.
Route number 6 connects the airport with the capital of the island and the tourist resorts of La Caleta and Tamaduste.
The big car rental companies are only partially present at the airport: you will find Europcar, Enterprise and Hertz counters. Apart from these, you can also book a car through Cicar, a car rental company in the Canary Islands, and Autos Bamir, a company in El Hierro.
Some cars park outside the arrivals area.
