The Canary Islands archipelago is located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa and consists of seven diverse and unique major islands and numerous smaller islets. Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera are natural paradises full of charm, lush vegetation and beautiful landscapes.
The islands enjoy an exceptional climate in all seasons, making them ideal holiday destinations all year round.
Volcanic in origin, the Canary Islands are famous for their black sand beaches, white sandy shorelines and jagged cliffs. They are an ideal place for water sports, windsurfing and scuba diving, or hiking, cycling, caving and climbing.
Tenerife is the most touristic of the 7 and is suitable for families and those who do not want to give up anything. If you love the beach choose between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote while if you want an all-round holiday choose Gran Canaria. If you love adventure La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro are the destinations for you!
The Canary Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean, opposite the coast of Morocco and the Sahara Desert. Slightly north of the Tropic of Cancer, they are at the same latitude as tourist destinations such as Hawaii, the Bahamas, Florida or the Caribbean.
Rich in natural parks and beautiful beaches, Tenerife is the most visited island of the archipelago. The tourist facilities are among the best in the archipelago: from villas with swimming pools to luxury flats, from hotels with spas to family-run guesthouses Tenerife is suitable for every type of tourist!
Popular with families and groups of friends alike, Tenerife is a paradise for lovers of water sports, diving and snorkelling. Popular locations include Playa de las Americas, Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje and Puerto de la Cruz.
A true paradise for beach lovers, Fuerteventura boasts over 150 stunning beaches of white or black sand! Ideal for couples, groups of friends and families, the island manages to combine tranquillity with adrenalin: besides snorkelling and divig the island is famous for jeep excursions.
The main resorts are Corralejo and Caleta de Fuste. El Cotillo is the destination for surfing and windsurfing enthusiasts while quiet Jandia is the right destination for those in search of the island’s traditions.
The landscapes of Gran Canaria are the best known in the Canary Islands. Las Palmas is a cosmopolitan capital famous for its nightlife and excellent hotel facilities.
The cycle paths, mountain trails, more than 500 beaches, water sports and beautiful traditional villages make it a perfect destination for lovers of adventure as well as relaxation.
Maspalomas is undoubtedly the most popular resort, ideal for groups of friends as well as families, but the lively Puerto Mogan, Puerto Rico and Playa del Inglés are no less popular.
The incredible volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote will bewitch you! Famous for its black sand beaches and lunar landscapes, Lanzarote is probably the most popular with beach lovers.
Cesar Manrique’s island is a real gem. Don’t miss Papagayo, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen.
La Palma is known as la isla bonita. Famous for its unspoilt natural landscapes, hiking trails and views, the island is quiet and still not very touristy.
Santa Cruz de La Palma and Los Llanos de Aridane are the two main towns on the island and offer good tourist facilities, excellent restaurants and numerous clubs.
Beautiful and unexplored, La Gomera is criss-crossed by amazing trails. The capital of San Sebastian de la Gomera, the largest tourist resort Valle Gran Rey and the village of Playa de Santiago are the most popular destinations in La Gomera.
Don’t miss the La Garajonay National Park!
A diving paradise, El Hierro is the smallest and wildest island in the Canaries.
Untouristy but very hospitable, El Hierro is the ideal destination for all those who are looking for a different kind of holiday. The trails are excellent, to be discovered by mountain bike or on horseback, and the whale watching excursions are exceptional.
Obviously the most convenient and fastest way is by taking a flight, either direct or with a stopover in Madrid/Barcelona. There are many direct connections from many European cities to Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. To fly to the other islands, however, it is necessary to make a stopover in Spain.
Direct flights take about 4 hours, but consider at least 6 hours for flights with stopovers.
There is also the possibility of arriving by boat from Huelva or Cadiz in mainland Spain, but the crossing is very long (calculate at least 30 hours). You might consider it if you want to stay a long time, perhaps taking your car or camper van with you.
The most convenient and ultimately fastest way to travel between the Canary Islands is by ferry. Distances are short and travel is quick, without counting the possibility of being able to take a rental car.
There are also some airlines that operate flights between the islands, such as Binter or CanaryFly, with departures throughout the day. Each island of the archipelago, on the other hand, has its own airport. Whatever the route, the flight time is about 30-40 minutes.
To travel within each island, however, we strongly recommend renting a car, as this is the only way to fully enjoy the sights and natural attractions that are poorly served by public transport.
