Mahon is not only the capital of the island of Menorca but also a beautiful town full of interesting sites. The oldest part of the city is located inland while the more modern part, full of clubs and restaurants, has developed along the harbour area. Sleeping in Mahon is the right choice if you are looking for a city that offers excellent accommodation, an active social life and magnificent beaches.
Mahon is full of services and opportunities, plus it is close to the airport, making it the perfect destination for those seeking convenience or travelling by public transport. In addition, its harbour is the place from where connections to the other Balearic Islands depart, as well as some of the most beautiful excursions.
The second largest city on the island, Ciutadella is located along the west coast and has been the capital of Menorca for centuries. The city is easy to get around on foot as it has a human-scale old town that is full of old churches and stately buildings. The harbour area is one of the busiest and is home to numerous restaurants where you can sample traditional cuisine. There are also numerous clubs here, which make Ciutadella a lively and active destination in the evenings.
Ciutadella boasts a high number of establishments in different price ranges and is ideal for both families and young people. Staying in this area also means being able to visit some of the island’s most beautiful beaches, including Cala’n Bosch, Son Xoriguer or Cala Blanca, but also being able to enjoy its dynamic social life.
The southern coast of Menorca is much more regular, little subject to winds and rich in beaches. Staying in this area means being able to enjoy excellent beaches without forgoing the evening entertainment. Ideal for those who enjoy spending days in the sun, the south coast holds some of the most beautiful beaches such as Son Bou, Cala Mitjana, Cala Macarella, Cala En Turqueta and the beach of Cala Galdana.
Son Bou in particular boasts a beach approximately 4 km long with many facilities for families and children. The facilities here are numerous as are the restaurants and clubs. Sleeping in this area will allow you to experience sea life at its best, while in the evenings you can have fun at the numerous clubs. Cala Galdana and Binibeca, on the other hand, are two popular locations for couples. Characterised by a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, these areas are full of accommodation of different types and price ranges, as well as small restaurants where you can spend romantic evenings.
Young people who wish to stay in the southern part of the island can opt for Cala en Porter, one of the most popular areas for nightlife. Here you will find several clubs and discos such as the most famous disco in Menorca, the Cova d’en Xoroi. Cala en Porter, however, is also known for having one of the most impressive beaches in Menorca as it is characterised by fine, soft sand and is washed by a truly crystal-clear sea.
The north coast of Menorca is known for being often exposed to the winds and rugged and is therefore very popular with wind-surfers. Along its coastline are small wild beaches and some beautiful coves that can only be reached by sea as they are nestled between high cliffs.
Among the most desirable areas here is Fornells, a quaint fishing village with great charm. Quiet, well served and equipped with restaurants, shops, supermarkets and clubs, Fornells is close to Cala Tirant beach, one of the most beautiful on the island.
Another secluded but well-serviced resort is Son Parc, which boasts a privileged location away from other towns but is still rich in amenities. Here, one can find restaurants, shops, numerous hotels and the island’s only golf course. Close by are the natural park of Es Grau and the Favaritx lighthouse.
The interior of Menorca holds small, charming villages where it is nice to stay if you want a quiet holiday in areas less frequented by tourists.
Ferreries, Es Mercadal, Es Migjorn Gran or Alaior are some traditional villages that are located in the centre of the island and have suffered less from the influence of mass tourism. Staying in these areas means having fewer services available but being able to explore places with a calm and relaxed pace, admiring the local people in their daily lives.
The beaches are not close by but these are strategic points for those who like to get around, because from here it is possible to reach every point on the island by travelling shorter distances. The choice of accommodation in these areas is not very wide, but the prices are certainly lower than in the more touristy locations. If you are staying here, it is highly recommended that you have rented a car so that you can get around independently, since thanks to the Me-1 state road, you can easily travel both north and south.
