Menorca is the ideal destination for anyone looking for a destination with beautiful beaches, beautiful landscapes and characteristic fishing villages. From large, well-equipped beaches with all amenities to wild, hidden coves, Menorca offers a great variety of beaches for its visitors. In Menorca, you will not find the influx of tourists that characterises the other Balearic Islands and you can relax on the beaches of its coastline in complete serenity.

From families seeking comfort to couples looking for privacy, from those who want to enjoy water activities to those who want to relax under the sun, the island’s coastline is almost 200 km long and here each visitor can find the most suitable beach. Some beaches have gently sloping seabeds and are ideal for children or inexperienced swimmers while others are popular with those who enjoy diving or water sports. The common characteristic of the entire island is that it is washed by crystal-clear sea with colours ranging from turquoise to emerald green.

If you are planning a trip to Menorca, here is a list of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

Cala en Turqueta

1Cala en Turqueta, Ciutadella de Menorca, Balearic Islands, Spain

Known as one of the most beautiful beaches in Menorca, Cala en Turqueta is a beach of soft, fine sand that is bathed by a turquoise sea. Located along the southern coast of the island, this cove boasts an unspoilt beauty that leaves all visitors with bated breath. Nestled between high cliffs covered in Mediterranean maquis vegetation, Cala en Turqueta is equipped with bathing facilities where deckchairs and parasols can be hired for hours of relaxation and where toilets, showers and cabins can be found.

Its characteristics make it a popular beach for families with children and all those seeking comfort and services. During high season it can be a little crowded so the advice is to get there early in the morning.

To get to Cala en Turqueta, located on the south coast of Menorca halfway between Cala Macarella and Son Saura, you have to walk down the road to the car park, leave your car or scooter and walk about a kilometre into the forest along the marked path. However, the walk is simple and easy, and suitable for practically everyone.

Cala Macarella

Playa Macarella is a real picture postcard beach: here the blue of the sea combines with the golden of the beach and the green of the vegetation. The beach is located on the south-western side of the island and is part of the Natural Area of Special Interest. The beach is set in a U-shaped inlet with high cliffs on either side that are covered in lush vegetation. The beach is equipped with all facilities, but to reach it, it is necessary to walk a 10-minute route from the nearest car park. However, the effort is rewarded by the breathtaking scenery.

The sea waters are clear and calm and even sea turtles have been spotted here several times. If you are looking for a quieter area, you can head to Cala Macarelleta, a small, wilder bay that lies right next door and is very uncrowded. There is also a quaint chiringuito near the beach that serves sandwiches, drinks and cold dishes.

Arenal d'en Castell

Arenal d’en Castell is a beach along the northern coast of the island set in a crescent-shaped bay. Stretching for 650 metres, Arenal d’en Castell boasts a large stretch of shoreline that is equipped with all facilities while a second part is free and surrounded by green pine forest.

The beach boasts fine, soft, golden sand while the sea water is crystal clear and has gently sloping seabeds. Thanks to these characteristics, Arenal d’en Castell presents itself as the perfect beach for families with children and for those seeking comfort; the free beach area, on the other hand, is more suited to those who prefer relaxation and tranquillity. Another plus point, the particular shape of the bay in which it is located means that the waters of Arenal d’en Castell are always calm.

Here you will find many hotels, flats, shops and restaurants, all behind this magnificent semicircular, wide and sandy beach, where you can spend a relaxing day.

The sea waters are calm, clean, with slowly sloping seabed and have repeatedly been awarded the Blue Flag title. Son Saura

Those looking for a quiet, wild beach will find Son Saura the most suitable solution. Located along the south-western coast of the island, Son Saura is a 300-metre-long beach of fine, soft sand that is often chosen by couples seeking relaxation.

Surrounded by a lush pine forest and washed by an emerald green sea, this beach has no bathing facilities and is also difficult to access, which is why it is generally not very popular. From this beach, it is possible to walk to the Es Talaier beach by a walk of about 10 minutes.

Keep in mind that sometimes there may be accumulations of algae on the shore, which are not collected here to preserve the biological cycle of the ecosystem. Once past this mat, however, you will be able to dive into crystal-clear waters.

Cala Morell

6Av. Mar, 07769 Ciudadela, Illes Balears, Spain

Cala Morell is a rocky bay located along the northern coast of Menorca and is particularly popular with divers. Its seabed is home to numerous underwater caves to explore, while the turquoise waters are clean and calm.

Just over 80 metres long, Cala Morell is a beach of pebbles mixed with sand that is set within an L-shaped inlet. The beach has bars, restaurants and other facilities for bathers and is frequented by locals and tourists alike in summer.

The area is also home to one of the largest necropolises on the island and a prehistoric settlement overlooking the sea.

Cala Blanca

Cala Blanca is an approximately 50-metre-wide beach located along the east coast of the island of Menorca, a short distance from Ciutadella. The origin of its name comes from the fact that this bay boasts fine white sand that is washed by a turquoise sea.

Equipped with all the services and bathing facilities that allow sunbeds and umbrellas to be hired, Cala Blanca also boasts bars, restaurants and places to enjoy a ‘siesta’. The beach also features a children’s play area and a diving centre.

Cala Mitjana

8Cala Mitjana, Spain

Another cove on the south coast, but certainly not another one. It is Cala Mitjana, one of the most famous beaches in Menorca. It is located next to Cala Galdana, from which you can also get there on foot by walking along a one-kilometre path that also touches Cala Mitjaneta, Cala Mitjana’s ‘little sister’.

However, the traditional way to get to Cala Mitjana is to take the Me-22 road, which connects Cala Galdana and Ferreries; just before Cala Galdana you will find parking for cars and scooters. From here, you have to walk about a kilometre and a half through the forest to reach the beach. The beach itself is little more than 50 metres long, but fortunately it extends inland, along the Barranc de Cala Mitjana.

Once there, you will find a sea of indescribable colours, but beware that you will have no natural shade or facilities of any kind, so bring your own umbrella, water and food. For thrill-seekers, the rocks to the left of the beach are ideal, as they allow you to dive from a height of just under 10 metres.

Cala Pilar

9Cala Pilar, Spain

If you are looking for a wild and quiet beach, Cala Pilar is the right choice for you. Located along the northern coast of Menorca, Cala Pilar is a crescent-shaped beach about 250 metres long and 40 metres wide. Due to the clay soil here, the sand is a deep red colour and is mixed with gravel.

To get there, it is necessary to walk a 1.8 km path through woods and sand dunes, so the beach is never too crowded. The beach is free and there are no bars, restaurants or other facilities, so it is necessary to bring everything you need.

The beach is surrounded by the cliffs of Marina de Santa Elisabet and right in front you can explore the small island of s’Escull de Cala del Pilar, formed by gravel and golden sand.

Sa Mesquida

10Carrer Gran de sa Mesquida, 9, 07701 Maó, Illes Balears, Spain

Sa Mesquida is a bay of golden sand located a couple of kilometres away from the town of Mahon. About 300 metres long, Cala Sa Mesquida is equipped with all useful services and is bathed by a crystal-clear sea. This area of the island is particularly famous for the wind that has shaped the coastline, creating striking dunes.

For this reason, the beach is often a favourite destination for wind-surfers or water sports enthusiasts. All around the beach is a lush pine forest and the famous Horse Path (Camì de Cavalls), which crosses the entire island of Menorca, also passes through here.

Cala Galdana

Cala Galdana is a half-moon shaped beach about 500 metres long, located on the south coast of Menorca. Behind it is the resort of the same name, made up of a handful of hotels, flats, residences, aparthotels and a few shops, bars, restaurants and mini-markets. It is ideal for families, especially those with young children, who can count on all the services and a splendid sea.

The beach has fine sand and is mostly free, although there are some bathing establishments where sunbeds and umbrellas can be hired. Right on the beach there are also some bar-restaurants where you can refresh yourself, while services include boat and pedalo hire. Finally, it is interesting to take advantage of the natural shade provided by the trees behind the beach.

Platja de Son Bou

Son Bou, located along the south coast, is an exception on the island, as it is a beach about 2 ½ kilometres long and not a cove. For the most part, it is a free beach, although there is no shortage of areas equipped for renting sunbeds and umbrellas. Behind it, the vegetation is low, little more than bushes, so you will not be able to take advantage of any natural shade: bring a parasol if you don’t want to hire one!

Despite its length, the beach is almost completely devoid of services: you will only find a couple of bar-restaurants, located in the southern part near the town, where you will also find a convenient parking area where you can leave your vehicle. Finally, at the southern end of the beach is the Basilica de Son Bou, the ruins of an ancient early Christian basilica and necropolis built around the 5th-6th century, very easy to visit.
