Aquarium of Palma de Mallorca

The Palma de Mallorca Aquarium is one of the most famous tourist attractions on the island and boasts a tour inside it that allows visitors to learn about the flora and fauna of the seas and oceans.

The Palma Aquarium in Palma de Mallorca is a spectacular site where more than 55 different aquariums have faithfully recreated the main habitats and ecosystems of our planet’s seas and oceans. Opened in 2007, the Palma Aquarium now houses more than 700 marine species from the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific and the Atlantic, totalling almost 8,000 specimens.

In a short time, the aquarium has become one of Majorca’s main tourist attractions and is popular especially with families with children but also with all those who want to take a trip through the seas of the world.

The motto of the Palma Aquarium is ‘To know in order to value and to value in order to protect’ and one of the objectives of the site is to spread a greater knowledge of the marine world and its fragility among adults and children. Inside, a path winds its way through more than 5 million litres of water that includes different habitats and aquariums that allow visitors to discover the beauty of our seas.

It starts with the Mediterranean Sea, where the importance of the ‘Mare Nostrum’ for the development of ancient civilisation is explained, as well as the important role it still plays in modern times, even though it is unfortunately considered ‘the most threatened sea in the world’. The Mediterranean Sea is, in fact, home to peculiar species of fauna and flora such as Posidonia oceanica, a protected species that produces most of the oxygen in the sea, filters and keeps the waters clean but is at risk of extinction.

It then continues with the tropical ecosystems of Asia, America and Oceania where you can admire coral reefs, colourful fish, various fascinating creatures but above all the largest collection of living corals in Europe. Then, you can enter the Amazon Jungle, a wild, green oasis where an ideal microclimate has been created for the growth of Amazon vegetation and where there is also a beautiful 7-metre high waterfall. Here, among the exotic vegetation, one can admire different habitats that are home to piranhas, turtles and alligators.

The aquarium’s main attraction, however, is undoubtedly ‘The Big Blue‘, Europe’s deepest shark tank, which, thanks to its 3.5 million litres of salt water, offers a truly unique and exciting experience. Visitors find themselves walking through a transparent tunnel through the aquarium, where they can watch sharks and rays swim by. The more courageous who have a diving licence can also experience the thrill of diving and swimming with sharks.

Another special activity you can do is the ‘Shark Vision Boat’, which allows you to admire the sharks in The Big Blue tank from a special boat with a transparent bottom. There are also educational activities and lessons to make visitors, especially children, aware of the many dangers that threaten marine life. There is also a 3D cinema at the Aquadome where reports, documentaries and insights into the different species of marine flora and fauna are shown.
