Palma de Mallorca International Airport (IATA code: PMI) is also known as Aeroport de Son Sant Joan and is the main airport in the Balearic Islands. Palma Airport is connected, also thanks to the routes of numerous low-cost airlines and charter flights, to many Spanish, European and non-European cities. In particular, Italy, the United Kingdom and Germany are the countries that boast the most connections in summer.
The airport is located only 8 km from the city centre of Palma de Mallorca and is the third airport in Spain after Madrid and Barcelona. Due to its numerous connections and its location, Palma Airport is very popular with travellers not only from Majorca, but also from the other islands of the archipelago. The airport underwent renovations in 2007 and now consists of a single terminal divided into blocks (A, B, C, D). It houses shops, bars, restaurants, traveller services, car rental agencies and car parks.
From Palma de Mallorca Airport one can easily reach the city centre as well as other locations on the island. The airport is located approximately 8 km from the capital, 28 km from Magaluf, 60 km from Alcúdia and 37 km from Port de Sóller.
Due to its proximity to the centre of Palma, reaching the city from the airport is possible via several solutions. Connections between the island’s airport and Palma are provided by several bus lines.
The EMT bus service line A1 provides connections to the capital and the surrounding areas. The service operates every day in summer with a run every 15 minutes approximately, with the following timetables:
The journey time between the airport and the city centre is approximately twenty minutes. The cost of the ticket is € 5.00 for adults, accompanied children under 5 years travel free of charge. The ticket can be purchased directly on board.
The airport buses of the TIB company (AEROTIB) connect the airport with other destinations throughout the island during the summer season. In particular, the main lines are:
For S’Arenal in summer, in addition to the AEROTIB A51 bus line, there is also the EMT A2 line. During the winter season when these lines are not operating, it is necessary to reach Palma’s main city bus terminal (known as the Intermodal Station) in Plaça d’Espanya with the EMT A1 line or by taxi. From there it is possible to take bus trains or the metro to your final destination.
The taxi service offers the most direct and comfortable solution, with a journey time of 15-20 minutes in normal traffic conditions. Taxis are available 24/7 at the dedicated area outside the arrival terminals. Fares are regulated and include an airport surcharge, with prices varying according to time of day and day of the week.
An alternative to TAXIs is to book in advance a private transfer to or from Palma de Mallorca airport. A driver will pick you up at the airport arrivals (thus avoiding taxi queues), at your hotel or wherever you prefer, to take you to the desired address.
It is the best solution if you do not want to waste time, do not want to use public transport, have a lot of luggage or are travelling in a group. To book a private transfer to or from Palma de Mallorca airport visit this site.
Alternatively, it is possible to hire a car from one of the many rental agencies on the ground floor. This is an option to consider especially if you plan to travel to other locations on the island. The airport is located right next to the Levante motorway and it is, therefore, convenient from there to explore Majorca. As another option, given the very short distance, you can consider taking a convenient taxi.
To rent a car in Majorca we always recommend comparing the rates of all companies with DiscoverCars because in our opinion it offers the best prices, allows cancellation up to 48 hours before rental and offers a very cheap comprehensive insurance policy.
