The city of Ibiza, Eivissa in Catalan, is the main centre of the island and lies along the south-east coast.
The historic fortified district of Dalt Vila, a Unesco World Heritage Site, dominates the city from a hilltop, offering splendid panoramic views of the bay. This open-air museum is a maze of cobbled alleyways and splendid palaces accessible via the beautiful drawbridge of Portal de Ses Taules and Portal Nou and home to some of Ibiza’s most beautiful hotels.
Just below the defensive walls are the Sa Penya district and the 2 exclusive twin marinas, Botafoch and Nueva, of the La Marina district. In addition to luxurious yachts, here you will find high-end restaurants and clubs, such as Sushi Point and Keeper, and the famous discos Pacha, Boom, Blue Marlin, Lio and Cappuccino. Just outside are the clubs Amnesia and Privilege.
If you’re looking for something a little quieter, drop by the Plaza del Parque where you can enjoy wonderful performances by street performers. Many of Ibiza’s hippy chic boutiques stay open until midnight – take advantage of this for some relaxing shopping.
Beautiful beaches are just a 10-minute walk from this cosmopolitan town where celebrities and partygoers from all over Europe gather to take part in the Mediterranean’s most glitzy parties. Talamanca is a favourite both for its good choice of hotels and for being able to combine quiet beach life with the hustle and bustle of the city.
The city of Ibiza offers a rich historical, cultural and architectural heritage that is well worth exploring.
The historic centre of Eivissa, the Dalt Vila, is a fortified Renaissance citadel dominating the bay from a promontory on which the Carthaginians founded the city of Bes in 654 B.C., later occupied by the Arabs in 902 and the Catalans in 1235.
The mighty defensive walls, in the shape of an irregular heptagon with a defensive rampart at each of the corners, took more than forty years to build.
Declared a Unesco World Heritage Site, the Dalt Vila quarter is an open-air museum criss-crossed by a maze of narrow, sometimes steep, streets lined with historic buildings and monuments, including, at the highest point around Plaza de la Catedral, the Almudaina Castle and the Catedral Santa Maria de les Neus.
The main entrance to the fortified upper town is the Portal de Ses Taules, a drawbridge located between the bastions of Sant Joan and Santa Llucia, but access is also possible from the Portal Nou, near the Reina Sofia Park, the Portella de Sella and the Portal de Soto es Fosc.
From the Dalt Vila and the bastions, there are breathtaking panoramic views over the bay of Eivissa, the districts of Sa Penya and La Marina and the island of Formentera.
Several luxury hotels, some excellent restaurants, many craft shops and several art galleries can be found in the Upper Town.
On the second weekend in May, Dalt Vila hosts a large and beautiful medieval fair. The Upper Town and the districts of Can Escandell, Figueretas, Playa d’en Bossa and Cas Serres boast an enviable summer calendar of events.
One of the most beautiful neighbourhoods in the old town of Eivissa, sister district of La Marina, located directly by the sea in the lower part of Dalt Vila is Sa Penya.
An unmissable evening stop for tourists and islanders alike, the characteristic tangle of streets in Sa Penya, one of the old fishing quarters of the island’s capital, is packed with elegant restaurants, trendy boutiques, cafés and bars.
The Sa Penya district is at the centre of the gay scene in Ibiza, particularly at the end of Calle Mare de Deu or Carrer de la Virgen.
The gay scene in Eivissa is concentrated around Carrer de la Virgen, between the old fishing quarters of Sa Penya and La Marina, just outside the fortified citadel of Dalt Vila.
Lined with bars, trendy restaurants and interesting hippie chic shops, Carrer de la Virgen is a colourful alleyway just 400 metres long, particularly crowded at night.
The street, one of the most alternative areas on the island, ends in a small widening, the square of Sa Torre, where a defensive stone tower is located and from which there is a splendid panoramic view of the town and Formentera.
Carrer de la Virgen is the landmark of excellence in international gay tourism, but in fact all the streets of these two lively neighbourhoods are frequented by all audiences.
Barrio de La Marina, like that of Sa Penya, develops around the harbour of Eivissa and is one of the nerve centres of commercial activity and entertainment in the capital of the island of Ibiza.
Several nightclubs and numerous restaurants can be found in the area of Marina Botafoch, the marina located on the northern shore of the bay of Ibiza, which offers beautiful views of Dalt Vila and from where one can embark for the island of Formentera, a popular place for long walks.
The labyrinth of picturesque narrow streets of the old part of the district, developed in the 17th century and overlooked by low houses with colonial architecture, branch off from Passeig Maritim de La Marina to the lively, nightlife Carrer de Barccelona and Carrer de la Virgen, the hub of Ibiza’s gay scene.
The Marina district is home to a number of fashion boutiques, craft shops, art galleries and several small hotels.
The heart of Eivissa and the historic district of Dalt Vila, Plaza de la Catedral is surrounded by the most important buildings of the old town: here you will find the Castell Almudaina, the Catedral Santa Maria de les Neus, dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows, the Bishop’s Palace and the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza and Formentera, once home to the University.
The square crowns the top of the walled citadel and offers splendid panoramic views of much of the city, the bay and the districts of Sa Penya and La Marina.
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Snows is located within the defensive walls, overlooking the Plaza de la Catedral, and together with the castle and the Almudaina occupies the highest point of Dalt Vila.
Built in the 13th century on the site of a Moorish mosque in Catalan Gothic style, of which only the bell tower survives, the cathedral was remodelled during the 17th century and today boasts a Baroque interior and Gothic windows.
The exterior is notable for its simplicity and the sturdiness of its buttresses.
Very interesting is the Diocesan Museum of Ibiza, accessed from inside the Cathedral, which displays paintings, sculptures, ornaments and liturgical objects related to the history of the church on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera. The museum, renovated in 2006, also has a collection of traditional Ibizan jewellery, rosaries and carved crosses.
The Museum of Contemporary Art6, housed in a former 17th century arsenal, presents an interesting collection of local and international artists. The nearby Can Ventosa Cultural Center7 regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, theatre performances and concerts.
The Casa Broner 8, a perfect example of rationalist architecture from the 1960s, offers an insight into the life of architect and artist Erwin Broner. The Puget Museum9, located in an 18th century palace, exhibits a valuable collection of paintings documenting traditional Ibizan life.
Easily accessible on foot from the centre of Eivissa, from which it is a couple of kilometres away, Talamanca beach offers a splendid view of the S’Andreus promontory separating it from the city and Punta Tabernera.
Just under a kilometre long and 25 metres wide, the fine golden sandy beach of Talamanca lies within a horseshoe-shaped gulf protected from currents and is bathed by shallow waters that make it ideal for families with children.
The beach is well-equipped and offers numerous opportunities for water sports and diving. Several bars, restaurants and shops can be found along the promenade.
Very close to Eivissa and Talamanca beach, the resort of Cap Martinet is one of the best places to fully enjoy the island of Ibiza. Particularly popular with wealthy tourists due to its proximity to the city centre, Cap Martinet offers splendid sea views.
Red Creek, a small pebble cove reached by a small path, is one of the unmissable spots in the area.
In the following map you can see the location of the main places of interest mentioned in this article.
Ibiza Town boasts a legendary nightlife that spreads across several areas, each with its own identity. The Port and La Marina districts come alive from sunset with the famous port bars, where you can watch spectacular drag queen performances and enjoy the pre-club atmosphere. Pacha, the historic club located in the Marina Botafoch area, is the only large discotheque open all year round and is an institution in the Ibizan nightlife.
The gay-friendly district of Sa Penya offers an array of alternative venues and characteristic bars, while the Puerto de Ibiza area is famous for its trendy bars and restaurants that turn into lounge bars after dinner. The Lío, a cabaret-restaurant-club overlooking the harbour, is the pinnacle of glamour and luxury entertainment.
In the upper town of Dalt Vila, elegant cocktail bars housed in old buildings offer a more sophisticated experience, with panoramic terraces where you can sip drinks while admiring the illuminated city. During the summer, after-hours parties go on until dawn, with beach parties and boat parties departing from the harbour.
Eivissa is the only real town on Ibiza, so sleeping options are wide and varied. You could choose to sleep near the harbour, especially if you took a boat to get to the island, or equivalently if you planned to leave by sea. Alternatively, choose to sleep in the old town if you want to breathe in a different Ibiza, made up of ups and downs, pedestrian streets and small shops, light years away from the hustle and bustle of the discos.
Speaking of discos: if you like to stay late at night, north of the harbour is Pacha, one of the most famous discos in Europe. Choose to stay near or far depending on your desire to stay late and your tolerance for night noise!
