Ibiza, the pearl of the Balearic Islands, is an island that perfectly embodies the duality of unbridled fun and Mediterranean tranquillity. Known the world over as the international capital of electronic music and nightlife, with its legendary clubs and discos such as Pacha, Amnesia and Ushuaïa, the island offers much more than its reputation as a party destination.

Its rich millennial history, witnessed by the historic centre of Dalt Vila, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, blends harmoniously with an unspoilt nature of hidden coves, fragrant pine forests and crystal-clear waters. In fact, Ibiza also harbours a beautiful coastline dotted with dozens of wonderful beaches and coves.

The island attracts a diverse audience: from young partygoers to wellness lovers, from families seeking relaxation to international celebrities. Its tourist versatility is expressed through an offer that ranges from luxury resorts to authentic agritourisms, from starred restaurants to hippy markets.

The favourable Mediterranean climate, with over 300 days of sunshine a year, makes Ibiza an ideal destination from April to October, while in the winter months the island reveals its more authentic and tranquil side, perfect for exploring local culture and Balearic traditions.

Just 30 minutes by ferry from Ibiza is the paradisiacal Formentera, famous for its Caribbean beaches and for being a VIP destination.

The beaches of Ibiza

The beautiful bay of Cala Vadella

Ibiza’s beaches are a fascinating mosaic of natural beauty and vibrant social life, perfectly embodying the unique spirit of the Balearic island. From the golden sands of Playa d’en Bossa, the island’s longest beach stretching almost three kilometres, to secluded coves like Cala Salada, each coastal corner tells a different story. The crystal-clear Mediterranean waters, ranging from turquoise to deep blue, lap these shores creating a perfect environment for both relaxation and water sports.

During the day, beaches such as Las Salinas become the meeting point of the international jet set, with its famous beach clubs mixing refined gastronomy and electronic music. In contrast, the small coves in the north of the island, such as Cala Benirràs, offer a more bohemian and spiritual atmosphere, famous for their sunsets accompanied by the rhythm of drums.

During the high season, popular beaches such as Cala Conta and Talamanca turn into lively social hubs, while more remote coves such as Cala d’Hort, with its breathtaking view of the islet of Es Vedrà, maintain a more intimate and wild atmosphere. The sustainable management of these coastlines, with particular attention to the conservation of Posidonia oceanica, helps to maintain the balance between tourist development and the preservation of the natural environment.

Things to do in Ibiza

Dalt Vila, the centre of Ibiza Town

Ibiza offers a rich cultural and natural heritage that goes far beyond its reputation as the world capital of electronic music. The historic heart of the island, Dalt Vila, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dominates Ibiza Town with its perfectly preserved Renaissance walls and cobbled alleys that hide craft shops and traditional restaurants. The Cathedral of Santa Maria, located at the highest point of the citadel, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and the harbour. Nature lovers should not miss the Salinas de Ibiza, a protected area where pink flamingos create a surreal spectacle at sunset, while the islet of Es Vedrà attracts visitors with its mystical legends and imposing rocky silhouette emerging from the sea.

Traditional inland villages, such as Santa Gertrudis and San Juan, retain the authentic Ibizan atmosphere with their hippy markets and quaint white churches. For nature lovers, the Ses Salines Natural Park offers hiking trails through fragrant pine forests and sheer cliffs, while the caves of Can Marçà in the north of the island reveal thousand-year-old geological formations illuminated by striking plays of light.

Local culture is best expressed in traditional markets, such as the famous Las Dalias and the Punta Arabí market in Es Canar, where local handicrafts blend with influences from around the world. At sunset, places like the Café del Mar in San Antonio and Benirràs Beach become meeting points for spectacular sunsets accompanied by the characteristic hippie drums. The island is also home to several historic farmhouses, the ‘fincas’, where you can discover traditional rural architecture and sample the local cuisine, including the famous ‘sofrit pagès’ and the herbal liqueur ‘hierbas ibicencas’.

What to eat in Ibiza

Ibiza’s traditional cuisine reflects the history of the island, a crossroads between Spanish and North African cultures, and is mainly based on fish, vegetables and rice.

Tapas bars are numerous, excellent and offer small portions of fish, meat, vegetables and eggs.

Fish products are of great importance: burida de ratjada, fresh fish cooked with chopped almonds, guisat de marisco, fish and crustaceans cooked in earthenware, bullit de peix, stewed fish, arroz a la marinera, a dish of rice and seafood, caldereta de llangosta, stewed lobster, are on every menu.

Very good arearroz de matanzas, rice with homemade pork and sausages, sofrit pages, consisting of different types of meat and spicy sausage with potatoes such as sobrasada and butifarrro, and frita de porc, fried pork with potatoes, mushrooms and peppers.

Among the popular desserts are Flao, a cheesecake with mint and herbs, Orelletes, an aniseed-based ear-shaped biscuit, and Greixonera, a sandwich soaked in milk with caramel and sultanas.

Boat Tours and Excursions

Boat excursions in Ibiza are one of the best ways to discover the beauty of the island from a unique perspective. Day tours depart from the main ports such as Ibiza Town and San Antonio, offering itineraries that touch the most hidden coves inaccessible by land. Popular destinations include the island of Formentera with its turquoise waters, the iconic cliffs of Es Vedrà and Espalmador Island, and many excursions include stops for snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters, lunch on board and the chance to watch the sunset.

Events in Ibiza

Ibiza is the party island par excellence and many people plan their holiday to take part in club opening and closing parties. The main discos in Ibiza organise amazing parties to kick off or close the summer fun season.

Religious festivities are also very important in Ibiza. Holy Week, for example, is particularly impressive in Sant Miquel and Good Friday in Eivissa when hooded figures parade from the Catedral Santa Maria de les Neus through the streets of Dalt Vila accompanied by monotonous drumbeats.

Eivissa’s Medieval Festival, held on the second weekend in May, and the Magiclown in Sant Josep de sa Talaia, a week of fun enlivened by magicians, clowns and circus performers, are also very beautiful.

Younger children will appreciate theEarth Festival in the first weeks of August.

Gay in Ibiza

Ibiza and Formentera, hippy havens in the 1960s, are liberal, gay-friendly islands reminiscent of Gran Canaria and Mykonos. Glamorous and effervescent, Ibiza is the European capital for clubbing lovers and indeed every night the discos of Ibiza welcome thousands and thousands of revelers ready for all kinds of fun.

Popular places to stay are Talamanca beach, lined with gay-friendly hotels, the village of Sant Rafael, where the famous Privilege and Amnesia discos are located, the Matinee and La Troya asesina parties, and the town of San Antonio.

The gay scene in Eivissa is concentrated around the Carrer de la Virgen and generally among the narrow streets of the old fishing quarters of Sa Penya and La Marina, at the foot of the upper town Dalt Vila.

Where to stay in Ibiza

Accommodation options in Ibiza are as diverse as its visitors. In the heart of Ibiza Town, luxury boutique hotels occupy renovated old buildings within the walls of Dalt Vila, offering breathtaking views of the town and harbour. The Playa d’en Bossa area is home to the large all-inclusive resorts and the more party-oriented hotels, perfect for those who want to be in the heart of the nightlife, with direct access to the beach and the island’s main clubs.

For a more authentic experience, inland agritourisms offer charming accommodation in renovated old farmhouses, often with a swimming pool and gourmet restaurant. The Santa Eulalia area is ideal for families, with child-friendly hotels and serviced flats, while San Antonio offers a mix of modern hotels overlooking the bay and budget accommodation for a younger crowd.

How to get to Ibiza

Ibiza is located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, but is anything but a remote island. Getting there is easy, as its international airport is literally packed with planes flying back and forth from major European cities in the summer. There is a wide availability of airlines to choose from, such as Ryanair, Vueling, Easyjet and Volotea, as well as Spain’s Iberia. Direct flights to Ibiza depart from many cities, and prices are often good even in the high season, so it won’t be difficult to find a comfortable and cheap flight.

If, on the other hand, you are already in Spain and want to try something different, you can get to Ibiza by boat from Barcelona or Denia. There are also connections by sea between the different Balearic islands, such as Mallorca or Menorca.
