Little Espalmador is the largest of the islands in the channel separating Ibiza and Formentera, beyond Cap de Ses Portes to the south and beyond the narrow peninsula of Es Trocadors to the north, and is part of the Ses Salines d’Eivissa i Formentera Nature Reserve.
Unspoilt white beaches, picturesque views and the famous mud bath after Platja de s’Alga, the best in Espalmador, make this beautiful uninhabited island, 3 kilometres long and one kilometre wide, a favourite destination for tourists. If you find yourself on this unspoilt paradise with mainly steep coastlines, don’t miss the beautiful beaches of Cala de Bocs and Sa Torreta and the defence tower known as the Guardiola tower.
During low tide, it is possible to reach Espalmador on foot from Formentera along a thin tongue of white sand, although the crossing is not exactly safe.
The island of Espalmador is located at the north-eastern end of Formentera. It is easily reached from the harbour at La Savina, leaving the town centre in an easterly direction via road PM-820-2. After a few kilometres you will find a diversion to Ses Illetes on the left, which you should take, without being frightened by the fact that the road becomes unpaved. After a little more than a kilometre you will arrive at the beach of Ses Illetes, and if you continue walking north to its end, you will see the island of Espalmador a little further on. At this point, if you are lucky and find low tide you can also get there on foot, although you will have to pay enormous attention to currents and boats.
If, on the other hand, you want to get to the beach in complete safety, you can only do so by private boat. It is best to ask at the harbour in La Savina, or rely on the many excursions that depart daily.
The island of Espalmador, being a nature reserve, does not have any hotels, flats or accommodation in general. Since you can only officially get there by boat from La Savina, we recommend sleeping there to leave early in the morning, before the throngs of tourists arrive.
Theisland of Espalmador is the continuation of the northern tip of Formentera, overlooking a narrow arm of sea that separates it from the southern end of Ibiza.
