The Balearic Islands are popular with holiday-makers from all over Europe. Due to their favourable location in the eastern Mediterranean, they can be reached quickly by direct flights and are equipped with a wide range of facilities, a huge choice of hotels, flats and holiday villages, bars and restaurants, boat tours, outdoor sports…

Add to this a wide variety of beaches to suit all tastes, beautiful scenery, delicious Spanish cuisine and it will be clear to you why they are so successful.

Each island has its own distinct personality and is suitable for a different kind of holiday: Majorca, the largest island, is perfect for those who want to alternate days at the beach with interesting excursions and cultural visits; Ibiza is suitable for those who like a more fashionable and transgressive nightlife; Menorca is the island for nature lovers and Formentera is the ideal place for those who want to escape the crowds.

Majorca

The stunning Cala Pi in Majorca

The largest of the Balearic Islands, Majorca is an island with a varied landscape that boasts an abundance of beautiful beaches, from long sandy shores with all amenities to remote and wild coves. There are numerous tourist attractions on the island: the legendary Manacor pearl factory, the impressive Drago caves, fantastic natural parks and the magnificent Serra de Tramuntana with its sheer cliffs.

Besides the island’s capital, the beautiful Palma de Mallorca with its rich artistic and cultural heritage, the most famous resorts are El Arenal, Magaluf and Alcudia. The first two are recommended for those looking for clubs and nightlife while the third is suitable for families. Smaller but very beautiful are Illetas, Cala Bona and Cala Millor.

Ibiza

The bay of Es Porroig in Ibiza

Ibiza is famous as the island of movida, with legendary clubs that invariably appear in the charts of the world’s trendiest discos. But Ibiza is also an island of extraordinary scenic beauty, perfect for a relaxing holiday immersed in nature. The nerve centres of Ibiza’s nightlife are the capital Eivissa and San Antonio; for those seeking peace and quiet and for families, the best locations are Santa Eulalia, Cala Llonga. Playa d’en Bossa is a good mix of facilities, beaches and clubs.

Menorca

Cala Macarella, enchanting beach in Menorca

Menorca is the green paradise of the Balearic Islands, capable of making all visitors fall in love with its unspoilt beaches, crystal-clear sea, quaint fishing villages and charming nature trails.

Still untouched by mass tourism, Menorca is peaceful but never boring. There are numerous bars, pubs and clubs on the island where you can spend long nights listening to music and drinking, including a very original and atmospheric club in a cave overlooking the sea that has become very famous.

The recommended places to stay are Mahon, the charming capital of the island, and Ciutadella, the second most important city, while the small villages on the south coast are suitable for those who want to have a typical beach holiday with the possibility of going out in the evening.

Formentera

Formentera is the least touristic of the Balearic Islands because it does not have an airport and can therefore only be reached by ferry.

Many tourists visit it on a day trip from Ibiza and don’t go beyond its enchanting beaches, but those who decide to stay for one or more nights can also venture into Formentera‘s little-known hinterland, marked by traditional lighthouses, windmills and stone walls, ancient buildings that stand proudly in the passage of time, perfectly integrated into the beautiful surrounding landscape.

The island’s most famous resorts are the capital Sant Frances, Illetes, Llevant, Mitjorn and Es Calo.

How to get to the Balearic Islands

The islands of Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza each have major international airports.

The most important is Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI), one of Spain’s busiest airports handling over 30 million passengers a year, and located 8 km from the city centre. Menorca Airport (MAH), 4.5 km from Mahón, serves around 4 million passengers, with a significant increase during the summer season. Finally, Ibiza Airport (IBZ) completes the Balearic airport network, handling over 8 million passengers per year, and is located just 7 km from Ibiza town.

During the summer season you will certainly have no difficulty finding a flight to one of these destinations. By the way, very often very good prices can also be found for August. Formentera does not have an airport, but is well connected to Ibiza from which it is only a short ferry ride away.

If you want to experience the thrill of travelling by ship, you can reach the Balearic Islands from Barcelona or Denia. The routes are operated by the company Balearia and operate at different times of the day, obviously increasing the frequency during the summer period.

Find accommodation and holidays in the Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands are a very popular destination during the summer period and, if you have not already booked anything and do not know which island to choose, we recommend that you first look for the accommodation that suits your needs and budget, regardless of whether it is in Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza or Formentera.

At the same time, if the property where you will be staying is more important to you, be it an exclusive resort on the beach or a villa with a swimming pool in the hinterland, the first step is to see prices and availability of the properties that are still bookable. The Balearic Islands offer a wide range of accommodation, from luxurious 5-star establishments to boutique hotels, from holiday flats to traditional farmhouses, allowing you to find the ideal solution for every need.
