Malaga Airport (IATA code: AGP) is the main airport in the south-east of Andalusia and is the privileged gateway for beach holidays on the Costa del Sol. It is a very important airport, ranking among the top 5 in Spain in terms of number of passengers.
Located just 8 km from the centre in a place called Churriana, it is well connected to the city by arterial roads, railway lines and express bus services.
The choice of flights to Malaga is generally very good as the airport is served by both flag carriers and numerous low-cost airlines, including Ryanair.
Here is all the useful information on transport at Malaga Airport: bus, train and car connections to the city centre and other locations.
Reaching the centre of Malaga from the airport by public transport is very easy. The fastest way is by train: it takes only 12 minutes to get to the city, with departures every 20 minutes from 5.30 a.m. to midnight.
Trains departing from the railway station inside terminal T3 are the C1 Renfe-Cercanias line and connect the cities of Fuengirola, Benalmadena, Torremolinos and Malaga. There are two stops in Malaga: one at the central station, where the train ends its journey, and one at the Malaga Maria Zambrano station, where it is possible to catch high-speed trains to other national destinations.
Another very convenient means of transport is by bus. The Bus Express A operates between the airport and the main points of the city as far as the Alameda Principal: the final stop on the Alameda is ideal for reaching the historical centre and Calle Larios. The bus operates from 7 a.m. to midnight, running every 25-30 minutes. The journey takes 15-25 minutes, depending on traffic; the bus stop is located at the exit of Terminal 3.
The disadvantages of the bus are a slightly higher cost than the train (but we are still talking about very low prices) and the unknown traffic. The advantage is that the bus makes more stops and there may therefore be one that is more convenient to your hotel than the train station.
If you don’t like public transport, you can consider a taxi: the fixed cost to the centre is €20-25, with surcharges for extra luggage and night rides. The taxi rank is located at the exit of Terminal 3 and the duration of a ride to the centre is 15-20 minutes.
An alternative to TAXIs is to book in advance a private transfer to or from Malaga Airport airport. A driver will pick you up at the airport arrivals (thus avoiding taxi queues), at your hotel or wherever you prefer, to take you to the desired address.
It is the best solution if you do not want to waste time, do not want to use public transport, have a lot of luggage or are travelling in a group. To book a private transfer to or from Malaga Airport airport visit this site.
For those who want total freedom, a rental car is always the best solution. Leaving the airport, take the MA-20 expressway heading north and you will reach the city centre in about 20 minutes.
To rent a car in Spain we always recommend comparing the rates of all companies with DiscoverCars because in our opinion it offers the best prices, allows cancellation up to 48 hours before rental and offers a very cheap comprehensive insurance policy.
If you have rented a car you can easily reach all the most important resorts in Andalusia, especially those located along the Costa del Sol. To give just a few examples Torremolinos is 10 minutes away, Marbella takes half an hour and in just over an hour and a half you can drive to Tarifa.
The most famous beach resorts can also be reached by public transport, but for other destinations it can be difficult to find good connections. Torremolinos can be reached by train in a few minutes; extra-urban buses connect Malaga airport to the cities of Marbella, Nerja, Estepona, while long-distance buses run to Algeciras and La Línea de la Concepción.
Buses and trains to other locations can be taken from stations in the centre of Malaga.
